Intel and Nvidia have been in a battle of words—and even some litigation—for some time now. The latest front surrounds Intel’s Atom platform: Intel offers integrated graphics with its low-power netbook-driving CPU, and sells those systems to equipment makers cheaper than simple graphics-free versions of the Atom processors. The upshot is that Nvidia’s Ion platform—which pairs up an Nvidia 9400M mobile graphics system with an Atom processor—is far more expensive for computer makers to use…and in the low-margin netbook business, that makes Ion a tough sell.

Wind River, Intel Brining Linux to Vehicles
Wind River Systems and Intel have announced a partnership to develop an open-source platform for in-vehicle “infotainment” systems built on Intel’s forthcoming low-power Atom processor. Unlike most existing in-vehicle platforms like Microsoft’s Sync that offer Internet access, Web browsing, traffic information, and similar services, an open source system wouldn’t be locked into a particular vendor or sef ot technologies, potentially enabling a broader range of consumer choice and customization options. BMW, Bosch, Delphi, and Magneti Marelli are already on board to support the initiative.
MySpace Preps to Launch Developer Platform
Back in October, MySpace pledged to open its platform to developers, in part to encourage third parties to deploy widgets, games, and other social networking tools on the site, but also to help the 400-pound gorilla of the social networking world maintain its lead on rival Facebook, which has seen a tremendous surge in growth in the last year in part due to opening its platform to developers.
Facebook Opens API; Bebo Jumps On Board
Social networking site Facebook was the first to open its platform to application developers, enabling ambitious coders and opportunist marketers alike to create widgets that can populate user’s pages and profiles. And social networking site Bebo is the first on board, announcing plans to embrace the Facebook platform&hellp;although it also plans to support Google’s OpenSocial.

Nokia: Over 100 Mln S60 Devices Shipped
When Apple announced earlier this month that it had sold over 100 million iPods, the news was greeted as something of a cultural milestone. Today, Nokia has announced that over 100 million smartphones and other devices running its S60 platform have shipped worldwide…and the fact the announcement will probably amount to little more than a ripple is an indication of just how much larger the mobile phone business is compared to the portable music player business.
Intel Developing Linux-based UMPCs
Although the company hasn’t made any formal announcements yet, conference materials available for Intel’s Developer Forum to be held in Beijing April 17 to 18, indicate Intel is developing Linux-based Mobile Internet Devices (MID) platform, potentially ratcheting up competition in the so-far lackluster UMPC market.

Intel to Launch New Desktop Platform
“
The chip maker’s Professional Business Platform will consist of a Pentium 4 processor but will also include features that simplify systems management, enhance security, and decrease power requirements, said Laura Anderson, an Intel spokeswoman.
Systems based on the platform will be the first to incorporate Intel Active Management Technology that will help a company’s computer administrators remotely monitor and protect PCs even when they’re turned off or have crashed.
Corporate computer administrators will be able to access a complete inventory of what’s installed on each computer and make changes. They also can audit for compliance with software licensing agreements, Anderson said. “
