Back to School Gift Guide

It’s that time of year again. Days are getting shorter, the beach is getting colder, and secretly rejoicing parents are getting ready to shuffle off the kids onto a bus again – or even off to college. Sad as this perennial parental parting is, a little back-to-school outfitting goes a long way in soothing back-to-school blues, and tech gifts are among the most useful ones to bring them back to the classroom. From elementary-school kids, to grads and undergrads, here are a few of the most useful gadgets you can send the young ones off with (and one killer backpack to put them in).

Camcorder Prices Down, Quality Is Up

Camcorders that would have easily cost $1,000 several years ago are now selling for as little as about $350. More fully featured units can be had for $500.

‘Prices are way down,’ says Jan Ozer, author of PC Magazine Guide to Digital Video (John Wiley, $29.95). ‘And quality-wise, much better than the VHS camera of years ago.’

Even the cheapest camcorders have long zooms with triple the magnification of consumer point-and-shoot digital cameras, better lenses and longer battery life. Many can double as webcams, and most plug into PCs to edit footage onto CDs or DVDs.
