The Force Is With…The Force

The Force Is With...The Force

Using the Freedom of Information Act, Jane’s Police Review has obtained information showing that eight officers of Strathclyde Police in Scotland claim Jedi as their religion on diversity forms.

Additionally, two civilian staff claim to follow the Star Wars religion. That’s from a total of 8,200 police officers and 2,800 civilian staff. No other UK force had Jedi members.

Jane’s Police Review editor Chris Herbert told the BBC:

"The Force appears to be strong in Strathclyde Police with their Jedi police officers and staff.”

Google Maps Helps Locate Child

There’s more to Google Street View than entertainment and not getting lost, it seems. Authorities have used it, along with GPS tracking from a cell phone, to locate a nine-year-old girl reportedly taken by her grandmother.

The problem began after Rose Maltais collected her granddaughter Natalie from her guardians for a weekend away.

Athol, Massachusetts, police chief Timothy Anderson told the BBC that Rose Maltais "said that she wasn’t going to return Natalie and then left the state."

Shadow Botnet Shut Down

Shadow Botnet Shut Down

You might not have heard of the Shadow botnet, but it was believed to have infected over 100,000 computers globally, using them to spread spam and malware.

That’s in the past tense now. The Dutch High Tech Crime Unit has shut down Shadow and arrested two people, one a 19-year-old Dutch national who ran it, the other a Brazilian who was negotiating the use of it. The police have asked Kaspersky Labs to help shut the network down.

According to Vnunet, a spokesman for the Dutch Public Prosecution Service said:

U.K. Police Down On Facebook Flashmobs

U.K. Police Down On Facebook Flashmobs

Would you like to be in the world’s biggest custard pie fight? Well, up until a few days ago you could have been, if you’d been willing to go to Brighton. But British police ordered organizers to cancel the event, which had been put together on Facebook, when over 1,200 signed up to take part – a crowd too large to be readily controlled.

Gangbangers Ensnare Themselves with YouTube

Gangbangers Ensnare Themselves with YouTube

Internet tough guys beware: the police actually are out there paying attention to the ridiculous claims you make on the Web. They may not chase you down for threatening someone after a particularly cheap shot in Counter-Strike, but as two Miami men learned, when you appear on YouTube brandishing automatic weapons and threatening the police, it’s a different story.

According to ABC News, Rudy Villanueva and Tony Logan were both arrested this week after posting a video on YouTube in which they showed off a shotgun, assault rifle and handguns, and told the police to come get them. “Metro Dade Gang Unit, here I am baby,” Villanueva said in the video. “Come get it,” Logan taunted. And they did.

Call It Wiki Law

You could wall it Wiki law. Down in New Zealand the police have launched an online tool, or wiki, that allows the public to comment on and suggest wording for a new police act.   If that seems like democracy very much in action, it is, and it’s never been done before, the police claim. They want a broad range of opinion before presenting the law to the New Zealand parliament.   “Launching a wiki version of a statute is a novel move, but one we hope will yield a range of views from people interested in having a direct say on the shape of a new Policing Act," Supt. Hamish McCardle, the man in charge of the review, told BBC News.   The wiki is open to all Internet users, and is part of an 18-month review period before the new act is presented sometime next year. However, when checked this morning, the wiki site was down, having been overwhelmed. Democracy is obviously popular.

Tara Labs Raided, Over 42,000 Cables Seized

“Police raided the offices and warehouse of Ashland, Oregon-based high-end audio cable company Tara Labs last week, according to news sources. The raid is reportedly due to the company falsely claiming to make their cables in the United States when they were outsourcing the manufacturing overseas.

Mathew Bond, the founder of Tara Labs, denies knowing of the infraction and claims, “These mistakes were rectified and won’t happen here again.” That might not be good enough for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which has been tracking the alleged violations since 2000.”
