Google Hit Over Privacy Policy

Once again Google is receiving a battering. This time it’s about having a direct link to its privacy policy from its homepage. A coalition of advocacy groups, including the Electronic Privacy Information Centre, the World Privacy Forum, Consumer Action, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the ACLU of Northern California have written to Google asking it to provide a link to its privacy policy from its homepage, which they consider a major issue, according to the BBC.

Back in 2003 the New York Times question whether Google complied with the California Online Privacy Protection Act of 2003 and the issue has been growing since then.

We’ve all hopped on the wrong bandwagon at some point, whether it was Pogs in fifth grade, Pets.com stock in 1999, or Betamax back in ’80s. Fortunately for some HD DVD buyers who found themselves in this situation after the recent death of the format, there might still be a way out. Circuit City enacted a policy on Thursday that it would extend its normal 30-day return policy to 90 days for HD DVD players.

Best Buy Tightens Procedure on Game Sales

“The policy is for violent and sexually explicit games that draw a mature or “M” rating from the Entertainment Software Rating Board. Best Buy salespeople will be trained in how and when to check IDs, and could face dismissal if they’re found to be selling violent games to children under age 17.

Julie Tanner, Christian Brothers’ corporate advocacy coordinator, said many retailers have adopted policies that prohibit sales of mature games to minors, but Best Buy is among the first to use mystery shoppers and set up discipline for employees that violate the policy. “

Bush Names New FCC Chair

“Bush named Martin, who has been a member of the FCC since 2001, to replace departing chairman Michael Powell, the White House announced today. Martin, a former special assistant to Bush for economic policy and a lawyer for the Bush 2000 campaign, has at times disagreed with Powell about how far the deregulation of incumbent local telecom carriers should go.

Bush’s decision was cheered by the telecom industry. Tom Tauke, executive vice president for public affairs, policy, and communications at Verizon Communications, praised Martin even though the regional Bell has disagreed with him on UNE-P.”
