Nintendo Launches WiiWare with Six Games

Almost a full year after Nintendo first allowed gamers to peak under the lid on WiiWare, the company has finally pushed it live. The freshly launched service allows Internet-connected Wiis to access an online collection of games for download.

The primary appeal of WiiWare since its announcement has been its potential as a channel for smaller game studios to put out games without the cost of distributing them through conventional means. The WiiWare launch seems to hold true to this premise, with games from small studios including Frontier Development, XGen Studops, Nnooo, High Voltage Software, and Gameloft.

Microsoft has released details of the first products to ship under its new Zune brand of portable media players. The first devices will sport 30 GB hard drives, wireless sharing capabilities, and come in three colors in time for the end-of-year holiday buying season.

“The digital music entertainment revolution is just beginning,” said J. Allard, Microsoft VP of design and development. “With Zune, we are not simply delivering a portable device, we are introducing a new platform that helps bring artists closer to their audiences and helps people find new music and develop new social connections.”

Sprint Streaming Rhapsody to Cell Phones

Sprint Nextel and RealNetworks announced today that Sprint customers can subscribe to RealNetworks’ Rhapsody Radio as part of the Sprint PCS Vision Multimedia Service. The service will be available throughout the U.S. for an additional $6.95 per month on top of the normal PCS Vision Service fees and enable customers to access high-quality streaming audio from the Rhapsody service, as well as selected podcasts, music news & videos, and a new "Beats N Breaks" of instrumental tracks.

Google Adds POP Support To Gmail

“On Wednesday, the company began providing free POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) access on Gmail accounts. The rollout is expected to reach all users over the next two weeks, said George Harik, director of Googlettes, the name of the Google group overseeing its startup services.

“This [access] is an important part of e-mail because of all the things not enabled by Web-based e-mail,” Harik said.

POP3 access, for example, allows users to read Gmail messages while they are offline and on mobile devices that support the standard, Harik said. “

Pop Goes the Gmail is a program that sits between the http://gmail.com web server and your email client, converting messages from web format into POP3 format that a program such as Outlook Express or Thunderbird can understand.
