Apple Debuts 1.8 GHz Power Mac G5

Complementing the existing lineup of dual 2.5 GHz, dual 2.0 GHz and dual 1.8 GHz Power Mac G5 models, the new 1.8 GHz Power Mac G5 provides customers with a powerful and expandable tower configuration at an affordable price.

ATI Shipping 256MB Radeon 9800 For Macs

ATI Technologies Inc. today announced that its RADEON 9800 PRO Mac Special Edition is now shipping. Announced at MacWorld in January, the first 256MB retail card available for the Mac marketcontinues ATI’s commitment to providing built in and upgrade card options for Mac enthusiasts. New and existing Power Mac G5 users can now upgrade to realize graphics performance improvements to meetthe demanding requirements of high end applications on the Mac platform.

A first in the Mac market, the RADEON 9800 PRO Mac Special Edition has 256 MB of ultra fast DDR memory, with 680 MHZ data rate and a core engine speed of 380 MHZ. The RADEON 9800 PRO Mac Special Edition enables a direct connection with Apple branded displays through dual output ADC and DVI connectors.

Apple Updates Powermac G5 Lineup

From Apple’s press release:

The top model, featuring two 2.5 GHz processors, the industry’s fastest front-side bus running at 1.25 GHz per processor, and advanced liquid cooling starts at $2,999. The entry model, featuring dual 1.8 GHz processors, starts at just $1,999.

“Our professional customers, across many creative and scientific markets, have been impressed with the extraordinary performance of the dual processor Power Mac G5 running Apple’s Unix-based Mac OS X,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “This new Power Mac G5 line has dual processors in every model to deliver even higher performance for our pro customers who need it.”

Apple Updates Mac OS X To 10.3.3

Released yesterday, the new version addresses a fan control issue, which “improves performance and reliability of the Fan Control system of the Power Mac G5,” according to Apple.

XBOX2 Development Includes Apple Hardware

The Inquirer reported over the weekend that the software development kits (SDKs) featured dual-CPU Apple Power Mac G5 systems with ATI Radeon 9800 Pro graphics solutions – effectively making them into high end Mac systems, but running a modified version of the Windows operating system core.

Although the final specification of the console is thought to be still under discussion at Microsoft – with issues such as the amount of RAM and the whether to include a hard drive still undecided – it’s known that Xbox 2 will feature six PowerPC G5 CPU cores and a new model of the ATI Radeon graphics chipset.

Alienware Area-51 outperforms Apple G5

Alienware systems outperformed the Power Mac G5 systems in six out of seven head-to-head comparisons, including tests using Adobe Premiere, MP3-encoding, Microsoft Word, and Quake III. Mac Worldopined, “The PCs beat the Macs soundly.”

The triumph of the Alienware PCs over the Mac G5 systems prompted Mac World to state, “We’re surprised at how thoroughly the PCs clobbered the Macs…” The Mac World benchmarks clearly demonstrateAlienware’s performance dominance and garnered the story a front cover position in the December 2003 issue.

Apple releases new Final Cut Pro software

The new version 4.1 of Apple’s Emmy award-winning Final Cut Pro now delivers simultaneous playback of seven fully uncompressed standard definition (SD) video streams with real-time effects using adual 2.0 GHz processor Power Mac G5 and Xserve RAID. The new G5-optimized Final Cut Pro 4.1, Shake 3.0.1 and DVD Studio Pro 2.0.2, with the new Compressor 1.1 update, are immediately available forcurrent Final Cut Pro 4, Shake 3 and DVD Studio Pro 2 customers as free software updates from www.apple.com/software/pro.

“With the new releases of Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro and Shake, we have optimized our suite of professional applications to tap the advanced architecture of the Power Mac G5, and the results are unprecedented for both real-time and rendering performance,” said Rob Schoeben, Apple’s vice president of Applications Marketing. “All this performance is available at a fraction of the cost of systems requiring dedicated hardware.”

Apple intros new dual processor 1.8 GHz G5

The Power Mac G5 lineup now includes three models: dual processor 2.0 GHz, dual processor 1.8 GHz and single processor 1.6 GHz. Featuring the world’s first 64-bit desktop processor with theindustry’s first 1 GHz front-side bus, the Power Mac G5 offers unprecedented memory expansion of up to 8GB and advanced 64-bit computation, while running existing 32-bit applications natively.

“Our customers told us loud and clear that they love dual processors, so now two of the three Power Mac G5 models feature lightning-fast dual processors,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of Hardware Product Marketing. “And with the entry level model now starting at just $1,799, the Power Mac G5 lineup is more affordable than ever.”

Apple ships new Power Mac G5

The dual 2.0 GHz Power Mac G5 will ship late this month, as planned. Apple also announced that it has received orders for over 100,000 Power Mac G5s since its introduction on June 23.

“The Power Mac G5 is a big hit with customers and developers,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “The two single processor Power Mac G5 models are available now, so we wanted to get those into customers hands as soon as possible, and we’re right on track to deliver the dual 2.0 GHz Power Mac G5 later this month.”
