A few times a year, camera manufacturers unleash a blitzkrieg of new models, perhaps somehow thinking that the sheer quantity of new cameras will wow consumers into making a purchase, rather than overwhelming them with too many, sometimes not-all-that-different choices. Today it’s Canon’s turn to unleash a horde of ravenous picture gizmos, with the company announcing no fewer than 10 additions to its PowerShot line.

Canon Intros Three PowerShot Cameras
Canon has introduced three new PowerShot digital camera models, the SD770, SD790, and SD890 Digital Elph models. The new units each feature optical image stabilization, 10 megapixel resolution, Canon’s Digic III image processing, and face detection technology that can handle up to nine people in the same shot.
“The Canon PowerShot SD890 IS, SD790 IS and SD770 IS Digital Elph cameras carry on the trend-setting traditions and extend the boundaries of technological ease and the individual sense of style that has always been at the heart of the elph line up,” said Canon USA’s senior Vp and general manager Yuichi Ishizuka, in a statement. “Canon continues to draw upon its 70 years of imaging excellence and photographic expertise to develop new technological advancements, as well as create stylish form factors as seen in the iconic box and circle design of ELPH cameras.”
Canon Entry-Level Cameras Get Update
Both the new PowerShot A550 and PowerShot A460 cameras will be available in mid-February and will carry a selling price of $199.99 and $149.99 respectively.
The PowerShot A550 is a 7.1 megapixel camera that features a 4x optical zoom lens and 2-inch LCD screen and features Canon’s DIGIC II image processor. Those of you looking for bargains on the aging PowerShot A530, may want to hold-out for the new A550 which touts a larger screen, higher resolution (7 Vs. 5 MP) and even better battery life.
Canon Tricks Out for ELPH’s 10th Birthday
Nothing says "Happy Birthday" like jewelry, right?
Canon apparently agrees: the company’s ELPH camera line is turning 10 years old, and in celebration the company plans to roll out a sweepstakes on its PowerShot Web site which will give 10 winners customized, jewel-encrusted Canon PowerShot Digital ELPH cameras created by the NYC Peach design team.
In addition, each winner and a guest will be brought to New York City for VIP, private seating treatment at the Z100’s Jungle Ball 2006 on December 15, 2006 at Madison Square Garden. Winners will receive round trip airfare, deluxe hotel accommodations, plus a limo to and from the concert: the winners will also by hosted by on of te concert performers at a pre-show event.
Canon Adds New PowerShot A-Series Cameras
Canon yesterday rolled out four new cameras for their PowerShot A-Series. These cameras – the PowerShot A700 ($349.99), PowerShot A540 ($299.99), PowerShot A530 ($229.99) and PowerShot A430 ($179.99) – should all be available in March.
Features in common across the six-megapixel A700, six-megapixel A540, five-megapixel A530 and four-megapixel A430, said Canon, include the company’s DIGIC II imaging processor, a USB 2.0 port, a widescreen 16:9 ratio resolution setting for taking panoramic prints, 29 languages and in-camera photo touch ups. Highlights of the A700 include 22 shooting modes, ISO equivalent speed ratings ranging from 80 to 800 and a 2.5†LCD, while the A540 sports 4x optical zoom lens and 2.5†LCD, among other features.
Canon Offers Up New Elph Digital Cameras
Canon today unveiled three new digital Elph cameras which the company says maintains “the petite profile that has characterized the line since its inception while adding big new featuresâ€. These new models are the PowerShot SD700 IS (April – $499.99), PowerShot SD630 (April – $399.99) and PowerShot SD600 (March – $349.99).
All three models, said Canon, sport a newly designed six-megapixel image sensor. The PowerShot SD700 IS includes features such as image stabilization, a f/2.8-5.5 4x optical zoom lens and a 2.5†LCD screen. The PowerShot SD630 offers up a retractable 3x optical zoom, 3†wide-viewing angle LCD screen with adjustments for 15 levels of brightness and a touch control dial to scroll through captured images or menu settings. The PowerShot SD600 also has a retractable 3x optical zoom and 2.5†LCD screen with 15 adjustments for brightness.
New PowerShot Digital Camera from Canon
Canon today unveiled a wide array of new digital cameras and photo printers. One of the chief among these was the new flagship PowerShot S80, an eight megapixel camera to be available in October for $549.99.
The PowerShot S80 offers a host of features which make it one of Canon’s top digital cameras, said Canon. It has a 2.5†color LCD, XGA movie mode, high speed USB 2.0 file transfers, a wide angle UA lens with 3.6x wide-angle optical zoom, improved auto focus, a compact design in a combination aluminum magnesium alloy and high gloss aluminum body, 21 shooting modes, a proprietary imaging processor and a full accessory kit.
Canon’s 4MP PowerShot A520 Camera
The camera will be in stores this March for an estimated street price of $299.99.
Like its little brother, the PowerShot A510 digital camera, the new PowerShot A520 model also is 13 percent smaller and 10 percent lighter than previous models, and is also equipped with a longer 4.0x 35-140mm (35mm format equivalent) optical zoom lens with Canon optics for sharp images. The new lens features all-glass construction and two aspherical elements in a seven-element formula.
Canon’s New PowerShot A510 Digital Camera
The next generation PowerShot A510 digital camera is 13 percent smaller and 10 percent lighter than its predecessor, yet it is equipped with a longer 4.0x 35-140mm (35mm format equivalent) optical zoom lens with Canon optics for sharp images. The new lens features all-glass construction and two aspherical elements in a seven-element formula.
In order to make the camera smaller, Canon engineered the new PowerShot A510 model to accept SD media. Even with its small size, the camera sports a large 1.8-inch LCD screen for easy preview and review. It also includes Canon’s exclusive DIGIC image processor for faster processing speed and excellent image quality with crisp, vibrant colors.
Canon Debuts Canon New PowerShot A Series
Named after their AA-battery power source, the new PowerShot A400, A85 and A95 digital cameras carry estimated street prices ranging from $179.99 – $399.99*, providing consumers with an exceptionalcombination of top-of-the-line features, functional design and excellent image quality at a tremendous value.
