Dell Mistakenly Sells Monitors For $15 Each

Dell Mistakenly Sells Monitors For $15 Each

D’oh. An online pricing goof at night on June 25 has cost Dell a lot of money. On its site for Taiwan, the company mistakenly put the price of a 19” LCD monitor as NT$500 ($15 US).

Not surprisingly, word spread like wildfire, and in the eight hours before a correction was made, some 26,000 customers purchased 140,000 of the monitors. The correct price was NT$4,800 ($148), and Taiwan’s Consumer Protection Commission received almost 500 complaints when Dell rectified its error.

Refurbed iPhones at Best Buy for $50 Off

Electronics retailer Best Buy (which, until Wal-Mart lurched into the game just after the holidays, used to be the only third party retailer offering iPhones) has announced that it is now offering refurbished iPhone 3G units on sale in its store nationwide. A refurbished 8 GB model goes for $149, while a refurbished 16 GB model goes for $249. Both prices represent a $50 discount of the iPhone’s normal retail pricing.

iTunes Offers Lower Album Prices

iTunes Offers Lower Album Prices

Apple’s iTunes music service may still be clinging to the idea of uniform pricing for music tracks—although their stance has slipped somewhat, what with iTunes Plus charging higher prices being charges for DRM-free tracks from EMI, and the company now engaging in a game of chicken with Universal Music, with one of the points of contention being Universal’s desire to institute variable pricing for its artists.

Although pricing for complete albums on iTunes has never been fixed, the majority are tagged at $9.99 in the North American market, typically making purchase of album less expensive than purchasing individual tracks—and many including goodies like liner notes. Some albums carry higher pricetags, with larger sets approaching $15 and $20, and other albums occasionally dipping below the $9.99 benchmark.

Seagate Discloses 2004 Product Roadmap

Almost all of Seagate’s new products will be released in the third and fourth quarter, a combination of the development time needed for the new platforms as well as preparation for the lucrative selling season.

Seagate’s new announcements will cover the server, desktop PC, notebook, and consumer markets. In January, Seagate’s executive vice president of worldwide sales and marketing, Brian Dexheimer, said Seagate would enter a “tactical period” until the fall, surviving on pricing moves until the new products were introduced. Because pricing is such a critical lever in the market, Seagate executives said Tuesday that they will not decide upon final pricing for the new products until much closer to launch.
