OLPC Drops AMD And Goes For Via

OLPC Drops AMD And Goes For Via

As part of a general hardware redesign, One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) will be switching from an AMD processor to one by Via on its Generation 1.5 machine. Currently using the AMD Geode, new models will carry the Via C7-M.

"The design goal is to provide an overall update of the system within the same ID and external appearance," wrote John Watlington, OLPC’s vice president of hardware development . "In order to maximise compatibility with existing software, this refresh will continue with an x86 processor, using a chipset from Via."

AMD Istanbul Processors Match Intel’s Latest with Six Cores

AMD Istanbul Processors Match Intel

Intel may have been the first chipmaker to introduce a six-core processor with the Xeon 7400 series, but it won’t be for long. AMD played catch-up on Wednesday by unveiling its new Opteron processors for servers, which will jump from four cores to six while retaining compatibility with the old socket 1207 platform. The company demonstrated the new processors earlier this week.

The so-called Istanbul uses the same 45nm processor as the earlier Shanghai processors, and should operate within the same power consumption and throw off a similar amount of heat as a result. That’s good for system manufacturers, who won’t have to significantly retool existing plans to make room for Istanbul.

Intel Launches Tolapai System-on-a-Chip

Intel Launches Tolapai System-on-a-Chip

Chipmaker Intel has formally announced its new Intel EP80579 Integrated Processor Family, a group of “Web savvy” system-on-a-chip designs and products that the company hopes will herald a new age of smart, Internet-enabled devices ranging from in-car infotainment to set-top boxes to industrial robotics.

Formerly codenamed Tolapai, the new chips and designs represent Intel’s first serious effort into the embedded and mobile systems arena (currently dominated by companies like ARM), as well as the consumer electronics and mobile Internet device (MID) arenas, all of which Intel sees as ripe for growth in the coming years.

Via Nano Processors Cut Size, Power Usage

Via Nano Processors Cut Size, Power Usage

Just days after unveiling its promising new OpenBook subnotebook platform, Via has fired up its PR machine once again to announce another big release from the company: a brand new processor line. On Thursday, Via debuted the Nano, a hyper-efficient processor bound to replace Via’s already efficient C7 processors in subnotebooks, UMPCs, and low-power-usage desktops.

The new 64-bit chips will come in processor speeds ranging from 1.0GHz to 1.8GHz, all with snappy 800Mhz bus speeds. The most efficient model, clocked at 1.0GHz, will consume a maximum of only 5 watts when operating, while Via claims all Nano processors except the fastest should be able to idle with as low as one tenth of a watt. In order to make upgrading to the Nano line easier on manufacturers, it has also been designed for pin-to-pin compatibility with the older C7 processors.

Future Intel Processors to Boast Six Cores

Move over, quad-core processors; Intel is moving up to six – and beyond – in the near future. In a company briefing on the future of its processor business, Intel revealed plans for three new chips, including two that will hit offer six or more cores, as well as a new architecture.

Intel hopes to provide a ready replacement for its existing Quad-Core Xeon processors with the new Dunnington chipset, which will come with six cores and fit into the same Caneland sockets used by the Quad-Core Xeons. Besides its six cores, the 45nm processor will offer FlexMigration technology, which allows server farms to build a single virtualization pool across machines based on 45nm and the older 65nm architecture. It will debut during the second half of 2008.

PC Vendors Eyeing the MacBook Air’s CPU?

PC Vendors Eyeing the MacBook Air

One of the interesting revelations that came with Apple’s recently-announced (and now shipping!) MacBook Air was that the Cupertino computer maker essentially went to Intel and said “Hey, build us a smaller CPU. What you’ve got isn’t cutting it.” So Intel fabbed a special part just for Apple, a custom-built version of the company’s 65nm Core 2 Duo processor that’s some 60 percent smaller than its standard-sized counterparts and consumes just 20 Watts of power, compared to a typical Core 2 Duo’s 35 Watts. The move marked the first time Intel has built a small form-factor CPU from a standard-size mobile processor.

HP Goes With Via In China

HP Goes With Via In China

Computer maker Hewlett-Packard has introduced a new desktop computer aimed exclusively at the Chinese market, the HP Compaq dx2020, and the system is notable not because it’s an HP product exclusively for the Chinese market, but because it isn’t driven by an Intel or AMD processor. Instead, the dx2020 marks the first time a major computer manufacturer is shipping a mass-market PC powered by a processor from Via Technologies.

TI Delivers 720p HD Playback to Your Mobile

While you may be thinking that HD content on a 2.5-inch screen sounds like a joke, consider this: the new OMAP3430 application processor supports up to a 1280×720 resolution and will give users direct access to their HD content, and even allows them to output the video through a projector or TV – now there is something to write home about.

The OMAP3430 processor is also the first to integrate the new OpenGL 2.0 graphic standard which the company claims will bring "Life-like" graphics to your mobile phone.

AMD Ups Ante with New Athlon 64 FX Setup

Microprocessor company AMD late yesterday announced a new dual core processor built upon their AMD64 platform. Targeted towards PC enthusiasts, the new AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 is now appearing in new PCs from specialty computer manufacturers like Alienware and Velocity Micro.

AMD said that the AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 dual core processor is now the highest performance dual core processor they offer. It reportedly shows an average 34 percent improvement on overall digital media performance and an 80 percent faster performance on
