Microsoft Unveils Windows 7

Microsoft Unveils Windows 7

After the critical pounding Windows Vista has received since its release – although Microsoft insist it’s been successful – there’s a lot resting on Windows 7, the next OS from Microsoft. And yesterday it offered a first peek at the system at the Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles.

As well as saying it will offer a more personalized experience, Microsoft senior vice-president Steven Sinofsky described it as an "exciting new version of Windows."

So what does it do?

Microsoft Unveils Windows Azure

It is, according to Microsoft’s chief software architect Ray Ozzie, “Windows for the cloud.” Yesterday at Microsoft’s Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles he gave the first showing of the company’s cloud computing service, named Windows Azure, which is Microsoft’s grand entrance into the cloud computing business, and due to be released in conjunction with the next OS, Windows 7.

Although Microsoft might have a virtual stranglehold on PC operating systems, it’s far behind in the cloud computing stakes. Amazon is already there, and Google with its Google Docs, is far ahead, leading Sam Shillace, who runs Google Docs, to tell the BBC:

Longhorn to be delivered on DVD

According to reports at Flexbeta.net, Longhorn will be delivered in DVD format. Active MSDN Operating Systems, Professional, Enterprise, and Universal subscribers may request a set of software distributed at the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference 2003 (PDC), including the preview versions of the “Longhorn” operating system and SDK, and Visual Studio “Whidbey”.

Eligible MSDN Subscribers can request the previews by calling MSDN Customer Service. Certified Partners and Breadth ISV / Empower partners should contact their respective Service Centers for further assistance. Note that the preview package contains DVD media, and a DVD drive is required. Please allow 3-4 weeks for fulfillment.

Longhorn to include new Slate theme

Below is some of the report by Neowin:

“When Longhorn debuts October 26th at the Professional Developers Conference in LA it will debut with a whole new theme code-named “Slate”. The Longhorn PDC build (4051) was decided around two weeks ago. Since then lucky company employees have had the chance to use the OS or take a look at it but are under strict orders not to talk to anyone about the PDC build.
