Disney Buys Into Hulu

The online video streaming site Hulu has proven a hit with folks who just can’t get enough current and archived video programming from Fox and NBC—now, Hulu as picked up another major player was the Walt Disney Company has reached a deal to bring its content to Hulu, as well as take an ownership stake in the joint Fox/NBC operation. Disney is the parent company of the ABC broadcast network; the move means that of the major U.S. broadcast networks, only CBS programming won’t be included in Hulu’s offerings.

The BBC, ITV and Channel 4 are probably the three biggest broadcasters in the UK. Together they’ve been developing Project Kangaroo, a video-on-demand service to offer more than 10,000 hours of programming and which "will work independently as an aggregator of both joint venture partners and third-party content."

Now it’s set to go beta in closed testing in January, with the uploading of programming – alpha mode – happening in December, according to the Guardian. However, the venture has yet to be approved by the Competition Commission, which is set to publish provisional findings this month and offer a final verdict in late January.

How Can You Get to Sesame Street? Online.

Perennial children’s programming favorite Sesame Street is taking to the Internet, with the non-profit Sesame Workshop announcing today that complete episodes of Sesame Street will be available on iTunes for $1.99 each (with 70 percent of the revenue going to Sesame Workshop), and with online video sides YouTube and Hulu also setting up Sesame Street sections featuring clips and segments.

iTunes will be the only service carrying complete episodes of the series; the episodes will accompany featured non-episode Sesame Street programming that’s already available on iTunes. YouTube will be setting up a dedicated Sesame Street channel with more than 100 clips from the show, while Hulu will offer more than 100 segments and 30 celebrity appearances on the show.

Apple has expanded offerings in the UK version of its iTunes Store to include television programming from the U.S. broadcast network ABC, its parent company Disney, as well as Viacom properties MTV, Nickelodeon, and Paramount. The new offerings currently include 28 programs, including ABC hits like Lost,Grey’s Anatomy, and Desperate Housewives, Disney shots like Kim Possible and That’s So Raven, along with MTV reality series like Pimp My Ride and Laguna Beach, Nickolodeon kids’ favorites like SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer, and Paramount offerings like South Park and That 70’s Show.

It looks like the rumors were (mostly) true: DVR pioneer TiVo has announced the new TiVo HD, a somewhat slimmed-down version of its more-expensive Series3 HD DVR that is nonetheless capable of recording up to 20 hours of HD programming (or 180 hours of standard-definition programming), supports HDMI, S-Video, component, and composite outputs, two CableCard slots, Ethernet, USB, and Tivo’s well-regarded DVR and programming features—all for a $300 price tag.

YouTube Gets The Beeb; Joost Lands Jump

The online video landscape shifted subtly today with two separate announcements. First, Britain’s BBC has inked a deal to distribute excerpts of its news and entertainment programming via Internet video sharing site YouTube, while upcoming Internet television service Joost has signed a deal with Canada’s JumpTV to being a variety of “ethnic” programming to its service.

Showtime for Amazon Unbox

Amazon.com announced today that original programming from the Showtime premium cable network is now available for digital download via Amazon’s Unbox online video service.

The deal puts programming from Showtime original series Weeds,Sleeper Cell,Dave Chapelle’s ‘For WhatIt’s Worth’,Fat Actress,Penn & Teller: BS! and Free for All online for $1.99 per episode. Hit series The L Word is also part of the deal, marking the first time the series has been available for (legal) download anywhere.

Fox To Put TV Shows on MySpace, Affiliates

News Corp. today announced a new digital video service dubbed Fox on Demand, which will make full episodes of select Fox television programming available via Fox’s hot online property MySpace as well as the Web sites of two dozen local Fox affiliate stations after the shows are first broadcast. Shows will be available in their entirety on an ad-supported basis; programming to be made available via the sites includes Fox shows Bones,Prison Break,Standoff,Vanished,Talk Show with Spike Feresten,Til Death,The Loop, and Justice. Other shows may appear throughout October and November.

A&E Goes to iTunes, TNT Does Dramavision

Video content continues to pour into the virtual shelves of Apple’s iTunes Music Store, with programming from A&E, the History Channel, and the Biography Channel joining the lineup of $1.99/episode offerings available for download. Titles now available from iTunes include A&E series like Driving Force,Inked, and Criss Angel: Mindfreak, History Channel’s The Revolution and Modern Marvels, and selected episodes of the Emmy-award winning Biography series on the Biography Channel.

XM Radio Passes 7 Mln Subscriber Mark

XM Satellite Radio continues to grow its audience, announcing today that it has more than seven million subscribers to its satellite radio service. XM passed the 6.5 million mark in early April, which, extended linearly, puts the company on a growth rate of about 1.5 million subscribers a year.

XM has worked to expand its exclusive programming offerings, featuring radio shows hosted by the likes of Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Willie Nelson, along with exclusive features and performances in addition to its 170 channels of music, sports, talk, comedy, and other entertainment programming. The service has also inked a deal with Ophrah Winfrey’s Harpo Radio to produce a range of new original programming, set to debut in September.
