German data protection officials couldn’t believe it when the CDs arrived. They contained six million piece of personal data, including bank account details and phone numbers. They’d bought the information online for just $1300.

Now, as the data protection of for Schleswig-Holstein investigate the source of the leak, which is believed to come from a call center. Call centers and lottery offices are suspected of selling data, according to the BBC, and lawmakers are calling for tougher restrictions.

Thilo Weichert, head of the Schleswig-Holstein data protection office, told the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper:

BD+ Copy Protection Cracked

Proving once again that every copy protection technique can be cracked in a manner of time, the venerable BD+ copy protection scheme fell this week with the release of a software package. SlySoft Software’s latest 6.4.0.0 release of AnyDVD, released on Wednesday, includes the ability to copy BD+ encrypted discs.

The BD+ copy protection scheme, originally developed by Cryptography Research Inc., served as a major factor in drawing Twentieth Century Fox over to Blu-ray, and started appearing on the studio’s discs in October. It was intended to offer a more secure form of copy protection than the compromised AACS protection offered on basic Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs.

EU Rules For ISPs On File-Sharing

EU Rules For ISPs On File-SharingIt’s a major decision, and one that could have lasting reverberations. On Tuesday, according to ZDNet, the European Courtof Justice ruled that Internet service providers don’t have to release the names of file-sharers in civil cases.   It all stemmed from a court battle between Spanish ISP Telefonica and Promusicae, which handles music rights in the country. Promusicae had taken Telefonica to court in Spain, asking for the names and addresses of illegal file-sharers so they could launch civil actions. However, Telefonica argued that they should only have to release that information in criminal cases.  Without making a decision, the Spanish courts then went to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) for clarification on the law.   In a statement, the ECJ noted the necessity for a balancebetween the protection of personal data and the protection of copyright.   "The ECJ notes that the exceptions permitted by the directives on the protection of personal data include themeasures necessary for the protection of the rights and freedoms of others. As the directive on privacy and electronic communications does not specify the rights and freedoms concerned by thatexception, it must be interpreted as expressing the European Community legislature’s intention not to exclude from its scope the protection of the right to property or situations in which authorsseek to obtain that protection in civil proceedings."   It did, however, leave the door open for the possibility of personal data being released in some civil cases. The ruling comes asseveral countries have hinted at harsher looks at file-sharers.

Sony CD Copy Protection Case Settled

Federal judge Naomi Reice Buchwald has given final approval to a settlement of a class action lawsuit brought against Sony BMG regarding the XCP and MediaMax copy protection technologies the company shipped on several million music CDs. Under the terms of the settlement, customers who purchased a CD with the XCP copy protection software can receive a replacement disk without the copy-protection software embedded in it; they are also eligible for $7.50 cash and one free album download, or three free album downloads. Customers with CD’s containing the MediaMax copy protection technology are eligible for free downloads only.

Mod an Xbox, Go to Jail?

In the UK, a 22 year-old graduate student has been sentenced to 140 hours of community service for selling modified Xbox systems containing pirated games. he was also required to pay £750 in court costs and had various computing and gaming equipment seized by authorities. According to the BBC, this is the first such conviction since the UK adopted the EU Copyright Directive in October 2003; under that directive, it is illegal to circumvent copy protection systems, including those in console games.

Microsoft To Aquire Anti-Virus Maker

“If Microsoft, the world’s largest software maker, bundles anti-virus features into its Windows operating system, security software makers could feel the pressure, analysts said.

“Microsoft’s acquisition of Sybari will get them into the (business) anti-virus market specializing in e-mail protection, a negative for Symantec and McAfee,” said Sterling Auty, an analyst with JP Morgan. “

Microsoft currently has a free anti-spyware program available for download. And although its in Beta mode, the response from Designtechnica readers and staff has been very positive. With built-in anti-virus protection and anti-spyware protection, Windows next operating system, Code-named LongHorn could be the most reliable OS yet.

Norton Releases AntiVirus 2005 Beta

With Microsoft quietly slipping into their backyard, security vendors may be caught in a prisoner’s dilemma: making rational decisions in anticipation of Microsoft’s next move. Symantec has released a beta of its upcoming consumer antivirus solution, Norton AntiVirus 2005 (NAV), that incorporates what Symantec has dubbed “Internet Worm Protection”. While worms are a growing menace, there is a catch; Norton’s Internet Worm Protection component suggests that users disable Windows XP’s Windows Firewall.

A Symantec spokesperson told BetaNews that the feature (Internet Worm Protection) is not a firewall, and that it has added this functionality to provide users with an extra layer of protection against what it deems, “one of the most prevalent threats on the Internet.”

FTC Testimony Cites File Sharing Concerns

Speaking before the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection, Howard Beales III, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said that file-sharing, or peer-to-peer, software can “expose consumers to unwanted pornography, as well as games, videos and music that may be inappropriate for children.”

Beales said the FTC issued a related consumer alert advising parents about the perceived risks of file sharing and warned consumers about potential computer security and information privacy dangers posed by improperly configuring file-sharing software.

Privacy Pressure Applied to Google, Gmail

Privacy International is the latest to step in line. The group filed a complaint Monday asking the privacy and data protection commissions in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Greece, Italy, Spain, Czech Republic, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Ireland, Portugal, Poland, Austria, Australia and Canada to investigate potential invasion of consumers’ privacy.

The international electronic privacy watchdog complained that the proposed service violates several statutes of the European Union’s Data Protection law. Even worse would be the dangerous precedent it would set, the complaint said. Noting that rival Web mail providers had already moved to offer more storage, Privacy International said that the trend toward increased storage and functionality set by Google “will fundamentally change the privacy expectation for electronic communication and will create additional security and data protection threats.”
