Sony Says PlayStation 3 Sales Up 70 Pct from Last Year

PlayStation 3

The PlayStation 3 has been on the market for three years—and for most of that time, the console has been pulling up the rear amongst so-called next-generation game console sales, regularly trounced by the Xbox 360 and (of course) the Nintendo Wii—and for a while even struggling to stay ahead of the decade-old PlayStation 2. But the introduction of the PS3 Slim coupled with substantial price cuts seem to have translated into sales momentum for the PS3—in fact, Sony claims PS3 sales this October were 70 percent higher than sales in October 2008.

Best PlayStation 3 Games: The 10 Best PS3 Games Picks

Having trouble picking the perfect video game to go with your new PlayStation 3 or PS3 Slim? It’s not surprising, with literally dozens of great options now available for the next-generation console, whose high-definition (HD) graphics, built-in Blu-ray player, multiple processors and extensive online connectivity make it a favorite with today’s gaming fans. The system has made major inroads this year, according to video game experts and analysts, with good reason: As the standout titles below clearly illustrate, it’s got  a tremendous selection of choices ready to please any shopper. Here are 10 of the platform’s best and most exciting games, each guaranteed to make a welcome addition to any enthusiast’s collection.

10 Best Blu-ray Players

When considering the best Blu-ray Disc players available today, we looked at audio and video quality—high-end video processing with 12-bit or 14-bit Deep Color—aiming to reproduce the most realistic picture. But a few caveats to note when doing your own research as well:

• Most players now have Bonus View (a picture-in-picture capability for some discs) and BD-Live support for unlimited online special features.

• Quick start is a convenience feature on some Sony and Samsung players that eliminates that interminable wait for loading discs and menus on many players.

Technology We’re Thankful For

Friends. Family. Gainful employment. A chance to dig into a big, juicy turkey with all the fixins and (fingers crossed) actually enjoy a full eight hours of sleep courtesy of a Tryptophan coma. These are tops on the list of things we’re truly thankful for this holiday season. But being the good consumerists and high-tech newshounds we are, we also have to give props where it’s really due – to all the shiny new gadgets and lifesaving technologies that let us squeeze 63 hours of fun and productivity into each and every day.

80GB PS3 For Europe And Beyond

80GB PS3 For Europe And Beyond

The 80GB Playstation 3 will be coming to most of the rest of the world. Already announced for the US, last night Sony confirmed an August 27 release date for the model to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East and Africa, with Russia two weeks later, according to the Gamespot blog.

The company will be discontinuing the 40GB consoles, but there will be no price reduction, as stocks are low; likewise, there will be no price reduction on either the PS2 or PSP.

The 80GB PS3 will sell in the UK for £299 (around $600).

380 More PS3 Games on the Way

380 More PS3 Games on the Way

After the Playstation 3’s first-year failures to the Nintendo Wii, it appears that Sony execs are plotting behind closed doors to bring the system back stronger for round two. Last week came speculation that a price cut for the $600 system was in the works, and on Thursday came the straightforward announcement that more games are on the way.

Speaking before 7,000 shareholders, Sony CEO Howard Stringer said the company expects an additional 380 games for PS3 in the coming year, which will be key to resuscitating profits for the company.

Picking a Next-Gen Gaming System

In a turn of events roughly about as surprising as Britney Spears’ and Kevin Federline’s recent divorce, there’s one question I’m inevitably asked more than any other this holiday season: “Which of the next-generation videogame systems – PlayStation 3, Wii or Xbox 360 – do you recommend?”

The answer, unfortunately, isn’t so simple, given each machine’s varying feature set, computing/graphical capabilities and a selection of games that, due to port-happy software publishers, presently varies little between platforms for the most part. Therefore I’ve taken the time to sit down and compile a little shopping advice for the benefit of intrigued buyers, who should read between the lines when it comes to marketing hype and largely incomprehensible tech specs. (Seriously… like most of us truly know what in Hades a teraflop actually is.)

Ipsos: Rumble-Free PS3 Looking Shaky

Sony’s forthcoming Playstation 3 gaming console is nothing if not controversial. It’s slated to include a market-leading Blu-ray optical drive, but it’s already almost a year late to market, it’s going to be selling for the highest price ever attached to a console game system (maybe—Sony just dropped the intro price in Japan, at least), and, dadgummit, while Sony is providing wireless game controllers, they will not feature the so-called “rumble” vibration feature Sony first brought to the gaming table back with the Playstation 1.

And, according to market research firm Ipsos, gamers are gonna be pissed when they find out.
