iPhone PlayStation Emulator Goes Public

For Apple iPhone and iPod Touch owners with a thirst for games, Christmas came early this year.  On Saturday, a programmer who goes by the alias ZodTTD released the first public beta of a PlayStation emulator for both systems, dubbed psx4iphone.

Owners of unlocked iPhones must download psx4iphone, transfer the application to their phones via an SFTP client, and set permissions for it. After a reboot, the application should run without any further modification, allowing players to load common images files such as .ISO, .IMG .BIN, .Z, and .ZNX. Legally, the only way to get ahold of these files is by do-it-yourself ripping from game discs you already own.

Sony Halts Production Of PSX

“Sony Japan has stopped manufacturing both models of the PSX media centre cum game console, with the company revealing that production has stopped and giving no indication of whether it plans to resume at some point in future.

The news was announced in a terse announcement on the official Japanese PSX homepage, ably translated by the scribes at German news site GameFront, and simply states that production of both current PSX models has been stopped.”

US PSX Launch Delayed Until 2005

Sony’s hybrid hard disc video recorder, DVD burner and PlayStation 2 console, the PSX, will not be launched in North America until 2005 according to the head of the company’s American electronics division, Hideki Komiyama.

It had originally been planned that the device would arrive in both North America and Europe before the end of this year, but the PSX has run into difficulties in Japan, where it launched last Christmas, with disappointing sales despite strong early figures.

Sony Updates PSX

Sony updates its PSX series with new models DESR-7100 (250GB HDD) and DESR-5100 (160GB HDD).

Sony introduced the PSX DESR-5000 adn DESR-7000 in October 2003.

The new PSX models feature improvements mostly in the DVD menus and video recording area. The DESR-5100 is also available in Silver in a limited number.

Sony has also taken the opportunity of an update to add an analog satellite TV tuner along with technology to improve the reception quality on the existing terrestrial analog tuner – essentially to minimise or remove ‘ghosting’. Sony also appears to have added a range of extra video recording modes to maximise the amount of programming that can be stored on the PSX’s hard drive.

Strong Consumer Demand For PSX At Launch

According to Japanese daily newspaper Mainichi Shimbun, the initial allotment of PSX systems sold out almost entirely in its first day on sale, with major retail chains reporting that many customers have been unable to get their hands on devices due to large numbers of pre-orders.

Earlier this week some analysts predicted that the machine would sell strongly for a couple of months, but would see little long-term demand – a statement based, it would seem, on Sony’s decision to remove certain features from the PSX temporarily in order to launch it in time for Christmas.

Sony To Launch PSX As Console Hybrid

The PSX, seen ahead of its launch Saturday in Japan, sounds like a good deal. It combines a DVD recorder, analogue TV tuner, CD player with music file and digital photo album, and the PlayStation 2 game console in one sleek box.

The machine, planned for overseas sale next year, costs 99,800 yen ($920 U.S.) for the 250-gigabyte hard disk version, which can record about 25 movies. The 160-gigabyte version costs 79,800 yen ($740 U.S.).

But the deal begins to sounds less attractive if you are one of the nearly 63 million people in the world who already own a PlayStation 2.

Sony Finds PSX Software Incompatibilities

Due to its lack of twin USB ports and other peculiarities of its peripheral support, the PSX will not work with a few third-party PlayStation 2 software titles. The affected games are as follows:

  • Petit Copter: This remote-control helicopter simulation, released by Aqua System, employs a special RC-styled USB controller that the PSX does not support.
  • Sidewinder V: The game released in the United States as Lethal Skies II will not support the USB flight sticks released by Logitech and Hori.
  • Shutokou Battle Zero: Known stateside as Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3, Genki’s urban racing game will not support the Logitech GT-Force wheel on the PSX.
  • Zero 4 Champ Series Drift Champ: Hudson’s latest drift-racing game will also not support the GT-Force wheel on the PSX.
  • Marle de Jigsaw: In what will no doubt be a blow to puzzle-loving gamers everywhere, Nippon Ichi Software’s jigsaw-puzzle spinoff of the Marle Kingdom RPGs will not support a USB mouse on the PSX.

The PSX also has only one USB port, so it won’t support any game that requires more than one such port — a two-player game of Para Para Paradise, for instance. In addition, as reported earlier, the PSX will not support the PlayStation 2 multitap for four-player gaming in any titles that support it.

Sony drops PSX features to meet Xmas launch

The PSX, which is set to launch in Japan on December 13, features DVD playing and recording abilities, a hard drive video recorder, a PlayStation 2 console and a media centre for handling music, image and video files.

However, the company has now admitted that some of the functionality which was claimed for the device at its unveiling on October 7th will now not appear, due to a rushed production schedule to launch the device for Christmas.

Sony PSX Pricing, Specs Announced

The PSX, which combines a PlayStation 2 with a broadband network connection and digital video recording capabilities, will come in two models, both packing a stiff price tag along with their impressive features.

The offering from the Japanese electronics and entertainment giant underlines the intensifying competition in the industry to sell the idea of home digital entertainment that introduces computer functions from the office into the living room.

The PSX, which is about the size of the PlayStation 2, is set to go on sale in Japan late this year for 79,800 yen ($720) for the version with a 160 gigabyte hard disk drive that can record about 200 hours of DVD, and 99,800 yen ($900) for the 250 gigabyte version that records 325 hours of DVD.
