Video conferencing solution developer ooVoo has announced it is partnering with Taiwan’s Quanta Research Intitute (the R&D arm of Quanta Computer, one of the largest OEM computer makers on the planet) to develop an Internet-based video conferencing solution that can be used on high-definition televisions. The video conferencing technology will work either through a set-top box or a notebook computer, and promises to bring “true HDTV quality” to video conferencing anywhere broadband Internet connections are available.

LG Files DVD Patent Suit Against Quanta
South Korea’s LG Electronics has filed suit against Taiwan’s Quanta, alleging Quanta infringes on four patents related to LG’s DVD technology. Quanta is seeking monetary compensation as well as an an injunction preventing Quanta from selling infringing products in the United States.
“LG’s proprietorship of DVD technologies is widely recognized throughout industry and the unlicensed use of our intellectual property is not acceptable under any circumstances,” said Jeong Hwan Lee, executive VP and head of LG Electronics Intellectual Property Center, in a statement.
Quanta Mulling Commercial OLPC Laptop
Taiwan’s Quanta Computer is already manufacturing the XO laptop for the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project, designed to get inexpensive, network-capable computers into the hands of students and educators in the developing world. Now, in an interview with Financial Times, Quanta president Michael Wang says his company plans to launch a commercial product similar to the OLPC, but aimed at developed markets. Wang notes that concepts, designs, and manufacturing techniques developed for the OLPC project could be used to create commercially-viable low-cost computers, and the company has created an “emerging PCs” business unit with the intention of bringing inexpensive machines to market.
Quanta to Make $100 OLPC Laptop
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has inked a deal with Taiwan’s Quanta to manufacture the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) $100 laptop designed by the MIT Media Lab’s Nicholas Negroponte. Quanta is the world’s largest laptop manufacturer, manufacturing systems for HP, Apple, Dell, Gateway, Sony, IBM, Sharp, Fujistu, and other major makers. Quanta will have manufactured nearly one-third of the laptop and notebook computer systems built during 2005.
