RadioShack Offers $100 3G Netbooks

True to rumors that have been circulating for a week now due to leaked ads, RadioShack on Thursday began offering the popular Acer Aspire One netbook for only $100 – with strings attached.

Much as cell phone carriers heavily subsidize phones for signing contracts, RadioShack requires customers to enter into a two-year data plan subscription to fetch the deeply discounted price on the netbook. The specially prepared Aspire One has a built-in HSDPA modem for access to AT&T’s 3G network.

The least expensive DataConnect plans available cost $60 a month, with a monthly data cap of 5GB. RadioShack will reportedly continue offering the 3G netbooks at the $100 price point until Christmas.

Cingular Sales Begin in RadioShack

Cingular Wireless and consumer electronics specialty retailer RadioShack today announced that over 5,000 of the latter’s stores would immediately begin carrying a full line of Cingular phones and services. This is in addition to 500 or so RadioShack outlets already offering products from the cellular provider.

This 10-year agreement, which was announced several months ago, brings Cingular’s full line of post-paid products and GoPhone pre-paid products to RadioShack stores across the United States. It provides for Cingular there single largest distribution outlet, while for RadioShack it is an attempt to drive more traffic into their stores in the face of growing competition from online retailers like Amazon and other brick and mortar chains such as Best Buy.

RadioShack: So long Verizon, Hello Cingular

RadioShack announced today that it plans to drop cell phone wireless operator Verizon in favor of a 10-year deal with Cingular Wireless and an 11-year renewal with Sprint PCS. RadioShack is the largest indirect distributor of wireless services in the United States, operating more than 7,000 retail outlets and 600 wireless kiosks.

The long-term agreement may have as much (or more) to do with money than technology. Cingular technically operates the largest wireless network in the US, but uses the GSM (Global Mobile Communications) protocol rather than the CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) protocol utilized by Verizon. GSM is the de facto global standard for wireless service, and RadioShack is keen to point out the agreement with Cingular brings GSM technology into its fold while retaining support for existing CDMA service through Sprint.
