AOL Relaunches Games.com

AOL has relaunched its online gaming site Games.com offering new in-game community features and—part and parcel of AOL’s makeover into an online advertising company—substantially revved-up integrated advertising.

“The newly relaunched Games.com is the ideal portal for advertisers to target an engaged audience,” said vie president of AOL Games Ralph Rivera, in a statement.. “The site’s current and expanding game roster and easier navigational capabilities will make it a mainstay for gamers of all ages.”

AOL’s Gamedaily Signs the Pros

Always thought you have what it takes to “go pro”—as a video gamer? AOL’s Gamedaily site is hoping you’ll at least check into it, teaming up with Major League Gaming to offer a co-branded MLG site offering highlights from the MLG Pro Circuit TV series, gamer profiles and blogs, as well as online game tournaments.

“AOL recognizes that gaming has become a mainstream form of entertainment and a compelling way to connect with young consumers,” said Matthew Bromberg, President and COO of MLG, in a statement. “By teaming up with AOL to cross-promote content, we’re making it easier for this audience to find and enjoy gaming content when and where they want it.”

AOL Launches Latino Portal

As part of its transition to a free, advertising-based community of Internet services, AOL is targeting the U.S. Hispanic market with AOL Latino, a new Spanish-language portal while offers a wide range of AOL’s core Internet services—email, instant messaging, antivirus, spam controls, blogs, photo sharing, calendars, and more—as well as Spanish-language content and original online programming.

"U.S. Hispanic Internet users are the fastest-growing community online, and what better way to tap into them than with a new free portal," said Ralph Rivera, AOL Latino’s VP General Manager, in a statement. "With original, exclusive content and the best online features available in Spanish, AOL Latino is a dynamic resource for U.S. Hispanics."

AOL Buys GameDaily

AOL continued its latest acquisition spree today, announcing it has acquired video game Web site GameDaily from Gigex, Inc., for an undisclosed sum.

According to Gigex, GameDaily is one of the top three most-visited video gaming sites on the Web, and reaches numerous industry figures and gaming enthusiasts with its GameDaily Biz newsletter, which it claims is the most widely read video game trade publication. AOL will also acquire certain GameDaily content partnership agreements.

AOL will acquire both the GameDaily site and the GameDaily Biz newsletter, and convert the property into the flagship video games brand within the AOL Games networking, integrating with the content content, features, and community offerings already on the AOL Video Games site.

AP/AOL Games Poll: Men More Social Gamers

In advance of this week’s E3 video game conference, a new Associated Press/AOL Games poll reveals some interesting tidbits about online gaming across different populations. Survey results were gathered for these two organizations during mid to late April.

The AP/AOL Games poll, said AOL Games, shows urbanities that play video or computer games are more likely to play online then those who live in more outlying areas. Another major finding by this study, which did a nationwide sampling of over 3,000 adults, found that between the genders when it comes to playing games, especially online games, men are more likely then women to form ongoing friendships with other gamers.
