A Look at Sony’s HI-MD Technology

A Look at Sony

“With Sony about to launch their 2005 range of Hi-MD (high capacityMiniDisc) Walkmans, Amazon UK have been slashing the prices of the 2004 models. This was too good of an opportunity to miss for me – buying the top-of-the range 2004 model at one third of the recommended retail price. In this article, I look at what has changed in both hardware and software, and discuss whether or not Sony have done enough to stay in the portable music market. Before I look at what has changed between the original MiniDisc recorders and the new Hi-MD models, let’s start with a short look at the history of the format.”

Fiber Could Reach 50% Of Homes By 2010

The report reviews a range of “fiber-deep” network upgrades planned by the major phone companies including Verizon, BellSouth and SBC. While fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) or fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) is viewed as the ultimate communications platform, other fiber-deep architectures, including fiber-to-the-curb or fiber-to-the-node, could dominate the fiber build-outs.

Among the reports other conclusions:

— Verizon holds the most aggressive plans to build fiber-based networks, although given the relatively higher costs involved in Verizon’s FTTP agenda, it seems unlikely that the company will extend the network to more than half of its service territory homes over the next five years.

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/) has announced the addition of Symbian Leads Pack of Advanced Mobile OSVendors, But It’s A Long Way to the Finish Line to their offering.

Wireless voice and data applications will continue to multiply and fragment across regions, networks and devices. No single wireless device type will emerge as the preferred platform for delivering advanced voice, data, and entertainment services over GPRS/EDGE, CDMA2000 1x EV/EV-DX, or WCDMA networks. Forward-thinking mobile software and hardware vendors are positioning their solutions to enable the implementation of applications across a broad range of end-user terminals with standardized, modular hardware and software architectures.

HP Compaq nc4010 Notebook Review

Quote from the review:

“The model on review is the DY883AA but HP offers a wide range of different models with various processors speeds, hard drive sizes and connectivity packages to suit any and all needs. The nc4010 DY883AA is placed towards the top end of the range – with a 1.6GHz Pentium M processor, 512MB of DDR SDRAM and a 40GB hard drive this is a pretty reasonable configuration. There is also a spare memory slot for future upgrades and you can add up to 1GB of additional memory. “

Five 8-Megapixel Digital Cameras Reviewed

Quote from the review:

“An 8Mp matrix in the zoom-lens class is a yet another step forward in digital camera evolution. Before, digital cameras with built-in lenses had lower resolution than reflex ones. Now, one will have to think twice whether to choose 6 Mp with interchangeable lens or 8 Mp with non-interchangeable zooming. It will cost you quite a sum to buy reflex lenses with such range of variable focal length (28-200 or even 35-280 mm), which are, on top of that, made for 8 Mp. These cameras will certainly look inferior to the reflex ones because of a limited range of long exposures and sensitivity, or (which is almost the same) due to high noise level caused by an increased sensitivity and prolonged exposures. The reason for this lies in matrices of a small absolute sensor size (8.8 x 6.6 mm (2/3″ standard)), that have been fit into 8 Mp. All reviewed cameras have the same maximal frame size of 3264 x 2448 pixels.”

New smartphone from Sierra wireless

This confirms the rumours that have been flooding the net, speculating as to just who the mystery manufacturer is. Sierra Wireless are best known for making the AirCard range, which enable wireless access for laptop computers.

The Voq has taken the standard candy-bar phone orientation and applied one major innovation: a flip-out QWERTY keyboard lurking behind the standard numeric affair. This makes it an attractive proposition for those with larger data-input requirements, and differentiates the product from the Mitac flip-phone and the popular Canary / Tanager design of the SPV.
