Creative have announced to the world, the awakening of a new dawn in sound card technology with their Sound Blaster X-Fi range of sound cards.

Following on from Creative’s Audigy range of sound cards, Creative reawaken sound enthusiasts with new blood, rather than tweaked variants of older technology.

Boasting a wide range of features, the Xtreme Fidelity range of sound cards from Creative come with promises of an entirely new audio standard for music, movies and games.

This was too good of an opportunity to miss for me – buying the top-of-the range 2004 model at one third of the recommended retail price. In this article, I look at what has changed in both hardware and software, and discuss whether or not Sony have done enough to stay in the portable music market. Before I look at what has changed between the original MiniDisc recorders and the new Hi-MD models, let’s start with a short look at the history of the format.”

Fiber Could Reach 50% Of Homes By 2010

The report reviews a range of “fiber-deep” network upgrades planned by the major phone companies including Verizon, BellSouth and SBC. While fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) or fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) is viewed as the ultimate communications platform, other fiber-deep architectures, including fiber-to-the-curb or fiber-to-the-node, could dominate the fiber build-outs.

Among the reports other conclusions:

— Verizon holds the most aggressive plans to build fiber-based networks, although given the relatively higher costs involved in Verizon’s FTTP agenda, it seems unlikely that the company will extend the network to more than half of its service territory homes over the next five years.  Read more...

HP Ships ‘Compaq X’ Gaming PCs

“The GX5000T offers a range of Pentium 4 processor choices from 2.8 to 3.4 GHz, while the GX5000Z allows users the choice of an Athlon 64 model 3500+, 3800+, or FX-53. Prices for the GX5000T will begin at $1,648.99, while a base model of the GX5000Z will cost $1,598.99.

HP was committed to using off-the-shelf parts, to ensure that there weren’t any proprietary OEM parts. “We have the same concern gamers do,” said Paul Morgan, product manager for the Compaq X. “I have a proprietary power supply in my [work] system, and I can never upgrade it.”  Read more...

Five 8-Megapixel Digital Cameras Reviewed

“An 8Mp matrix in the zoom-lens class is a yet another step forward in digital camera evolution. Before, digital cameras with built-in lenses had lower resolution than reflex ones. Now, one will have to think twice whether to choose 6 Mp with interchangeable lens or 8 Mp with non-interchangeable zooming. It will cost you quite a sum to buy reflex lenses with such range of variable focal length (28-200 or even 35-280 mm), which are, on top of that, made for 8 Mp. These cameras will certainly look inferior to the reflex ones because of a limited range of long exposures and sensitivity, or (which is almost the same) due to high noise level caused by an increased sensitivity and prolonged exposures. The reason for this lies in matrices of a small absolute sensor size (8.8 x 6.6 mm (2/3″ standard)), that have been fit into 8 Mp.
