The battle between competing HD DVD and Blu-ray high-definition disc formats has been quiet for a little while, but the Blu-ray camp has just fired things up again, announcing that as of July 1, consumers who buy a qualifying Blu-ray disc player will be eligible to receive five Blu-ray movies from a list of 20 popular Blu-ray titles—for free.

Samsung Launches BD-P1000 Blu-Ray Player
Samsung is looking to really make a dent in the war of next-gen DVDs. Their new BD-P1000 Blu-Ray Disc Player is hitting stores June 25th and will only cost $999. The player will be packed withlots of features and will be in stores soon enough to combat Toshiba’s HD-DVD players. No worries about getting your hands on movies to watch either. Netflix will be offering Blu-Ray rentalsthrough their service at no additional cost with about 200 titles to be released by the year’s end.
TDK Releases Bare Blu-ray Disc Media
TDK today said they were the first retailer to begin shipping bare Blu-ray Disc media for the consumer market. They’ve initially brought to retail 25GB recordable and rewritable Blu-Ray Disc media for $19.99 and $24.99 respectively.
Besides the 25GB Blu-Ray Discs, said TDK, they would also make available later this year dual layer 50GB recordable and rewritable discs. All of these discs, which are cartridge free, are capable of delivering 2x (72Mbps) rated recording speed and are being developed with a number of formulations and manufacturing techniques to increase the longevity of the media.
