The survey, which is part of the firm’s “U.S. Wireless Satisfaction Monitor,” noted the carrier “sets a daunting benchmark for its competition, achieving class-leading ratings for service quality and customer care.”

“Despite a relatively weak device portfolio, sub-par bundled minutes and light youth segment presence relative to Sprint, Cingular [Wireless L.L.C.] and other national operators, Verizon Wireless continues to represent the gold standard in customer satisfaction,” said David Kerr, vice president and global wireless practice leader at Strategy Analytics.

Microsoft Names Wireless Video Partners

The companies’ new MobileVision technology is optimized for Microsoft’s Windows Media 9 Series and supports industry-standard 3GPP formats and protocols. It can work on both Windows and non-Windows operating systems.

Mobile Domain Registry Announced

Microsoft Corp., Nokia Corp., Vodafone, 3, GSM Association, Hewlett-Packard Co., Orange, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Sun Microsystems Inc. jointly announced their intention to create a mobile Top Level Domain. The companies said they will file for the Top Level Domain through the Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which is the association that registers Internet addresses. Top Level Domains include Internet addresses ending in .com, .org, .net and others.

Bush Administration Challenges China’s WiFi

A letter to Beijing officials raising concerns about China’s Wireless Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure, or WAPI, standard and the need to resolve the dispute before the June 1 implementation of the standard was signed by Commerce Secretary Donald Evans, Secretary of State Colin Powell and U.S. Trade Representative, according to industry lobbyists who were briefed on the letter’s contents.

FCC Approves EV-DO Phone For Verizon

The Federal Communications Commission recently approved the VX8000 EV-DO mobile phone from LG. The phone features Qualcomm Inc.’s MSM6500 CDMA EV-DO chipset and a 1.3 megapixel camera, and support for video, 3D graphics and voice dialing. LG did not immediately return requests for comment on the device, and a Verizon spokeswoman said the carrier had no comment on the phone.

Ve1rizon’s network will be based on 1X EV-DO, which offers speeds of 300 to 500 kilobits per second, or about 10 times the average dial-up connection speed.

DoJ Probes Push To Talk Industry

The Justice Department’s investigation comes less than two weeks after Nextel and Verizon Wireless agreed to drop lawsuits against each other involving allegations of corporate espionage and false advertising about PTT service.

“Nextel has received a request for information from the staff of the United States Department of Justice, and we are responding to their request,” said Nextel spokesperson Audrey Schaefer.

AT&T To Provide Wireless For Amtrak

AT&T Wireless Services Inc. reported Wi-Fi expansion plans including a deal with Amtrak to provide high-speed data services in six of the railroad’s busiest train stations along the Northeast Corridor and a reciprocal roaming agreement with T-Mobile USA Inc. expanding service in a trio of airports.

AT&T Wireless Sets Bid Deadline

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, AT&T Wireless’ investment banker Merrill Lynch & Co. sent a letter outlining the timeframe to a number of potential suitors, including Cingular Wireless L.L.C.’s parent companies SBC Communications Inc. and BellSouth Corp., current minority shareholder NTT DoCoMo Inc., Nextel Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group plc.
