300 DVDs On A Single Disc?

300 DVDs On A Single Disc?

Researchers at Swinburne University of Technology in Australia have come up with a new optical recording method that could allow a giant 1.6 terabytes of information – the equivalent of 300 DVDs – to fit on a single disc, according to Nature.

Their 5-D recording method uses nanometer-scale particles of gold as a recording medium and manipulates the light pointed at them.

How does it work? The nanoparticles record information in different color wavelengths, all in the same physical disc location. As the amount of incoming laser light absorbed by the nanoparticles depends on its polarization, this allows the researchers to record different layers of information at different angles to create the 5-D effect.

QNAP Debuts Home & Office Surveillance Kit

Taiwan’s QNAP has introduced its NVR-1012 home and office surveillance system. The NVR-1012 server is based on Linux and hooks into a home network (and those remote cameras) via Ethernet. The system supports MPEG4 and Motion JPEG recording of up to four simultaneous channels, and supports up to 1 TB of storage on an internal drive—users who want more storage for surveillance footage can hook up additional storage via an eSATA connection. The system captures at up to 30 fps, time stamps recorded video, offers 3GPP streaming, includes am infrared night view feature, and can be monitored and administered using via Internet Explorer or on any 3GPP mobile device. Users can also set up a number of different alarm and recording triggers, including motion detection.

Oldest Recording Heard

Oldest Recording HeardWe all know that Edison invented the phonograph, but did you know that he didn’t make the first sound recording? His breakthrough came in 1877, but last week the first known recording, a10-second clip of a French folk song, “Au Clair De La Lune,” made in 1860, was played.   It was made using a phonautograph, the recording being etched by a needle onto paper coveredwith soot. The needle was moved by a diaphragm that responded to sound, although the whole thing was cranked by hand. Curiously, the recording couldn’t be played back using the equipment– instead, US scientists had to create a virtual stylus.   David Giovanni, the audio historian who found the recording, told AP,   "When I firstheard the recording as you hear it … it was magical, so ethereal. The fact is it’s recorded in smoke. The voice is coming out from behind this screen of aural smoke."   The phonautographwas invented by a Parisian, Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville, who made the recording on April 9, 1860. The sound was finally captured by a group called FirstSounds who worked at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, where high resolution digital scans of the paper recording were made and played with a digital stylus.
