Toshiba Folds Three GPUs into One Notebook

Toshiba Folds Three GPUs into One Notebook

One graphics processer in a notebook upgrades performance significantly. Two helps improve battery life by switching between them under different loads. Three… is downright excessive. Toshiba released the very first gaming notebooks to venture into this territory on Thursday with the Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q708 and X305-Q706.

The notebooks each get a triumvirate of Nvidia GPUS: one GeForce 9400M for sipping power and two GeForce 9800M GTS GPUs for gaming performance. Like dual-GPU machines, they will switch between running on the integrated chip or the dual discrete chips, to conserve battery when the force of dual nVidia monsters isn’t needed.

Power and efficiency always come at the expense of one another. Add a powerful graphics accelerator to your notebook and it makes games fly, but gobbles down battery. Use integrated graphics and you can stretch your battery for hours but games crawl. Nvidia, however, now claims it can offer the best of both worlds with “hybrid” graphics accelerators for notebooks which can turn off when not needed to extend battery life using integrated graphics.

Toshiba X205 Gaming Notebooks Get SLI

Toshiba has announced revisions to its Satellite X205 family of 17-inch notebook computers aimed primarily at gamers and folks who want premium digital entertainment in a conceivably-portable package. The Satellite X205-SLI1 nd X205-SLI3 both feature Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics controllers with a combined 512 MB of dedicated video memory and full DirectX 10 compatibility.

"Last year, Toshiba launched their gaming notebook lineup with NVIDIA GPUs, evolving the notebook gaming experience with a unique blend of sheer performance, practical versatility, and elegant style," said Nvidia SLI technology manager Rene Haas, in a statement. "Toshiba’s addition of NVIDIA SLI technology to their gaming notebooks further demonstrates their commitment to delivering the ultimate entertainment experience to gamers on the go."

Nvida Goes Mobile With GeForce 8M

With Nvidia cranking out new versions of the GeForce 8 right and left, it should come as no surprise that their flagship GPU is finally shedding some weight and migrating to notebook computers. The company unveiled the GeForce 8M series on Wednesday, which will bring DirectX 10, HD video processing, and of course – higher performance – to laptops.

While gaming drives the demand for faster GPUs on desktops, notebook users will be able to find other uses for the extra pixel-pushing power. Windows Vista, for one, will take advantage of the GeForce 8M’s DirectX 10 capability with its spiffed-up (and more performance demanding) Aero Premium interface. High-definition movies in the H.264 codec can also use the GPU as a hardware decoder, taking the strain off the CPU.
