AT&T Announces Broadband Limits

First came Comcast, and now AT&T has announced plans to impose limits on the data use of its customers. In a filing with the FCC the company said:

“AT&T plans to initiate a broadband Internet access usage trial in Reno, Nevada beginning in November.”

“AT&T will be providing written notice to customers involved in the trial explaining that their broadband service will be subject to a certain monthly usage tier for the total amount of data they may send and receive, as well as a per gigabyte charge in the event they exceed the usage tier.”

MySpace, MTV to Plant Ads in Pirate Video

MySpace, MTV to Plant Ads in Pirate Video

Social networking titan MySpace has announced a new partnership with MTV Networks and technology firm Auditude to try to wring a profit out of videos uploaded by MySpace subscribers in violation of copyright. Instead of issuing takedown notices for material distributed without permission, the system will try to identify pirated video clips via fingerprinting technology, then re-distribute them with embedded ads. The idea is that, instead of slapping fans with takedown notices for exhibiting enthusiasms for their favorite shows, the ad-enhanced versions of the uploaded videos leverage fans’ participation in the online video world and enable the legitimate content owners to benefit from the content.

MySpace Partners in Darfur Aid Campaign

The words “MySpace” and “genocide” don’t often appear in the same sentence—usually it’s just “stalking” or “school bomb threat”—but today social networking giant MySpace announced a partnership with humanitarian organization Oxfam and nearly two dozen bands to raise awareness of—and funds for—the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan’s Darfur region. The Rock for Darfur campaign will feature more than 20 concerts across North America on October 21, online interactive promotions, and a public service announcement featuring actor Samuel L. Jackson which will appear in theaters in front of selected 20th Century Fox films, as well as on cable and online outlets.

Justice League Game, Voice Talent Announced

Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment today unveiled the names of voice talent they’ve signed for character voiceovers in their upcoming video game console title Justice League Heroes. This title is slated to come out this fall on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable and Xbox video game systems.

Justice League Heroes, which is being distributed by Eidos Interactive and developed by Snowblind Studios, is an action-adventure game which allows players to become Justice League members such as Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter and Zatanna, as well as other unlockable super heroes, in a storyline created by award-winning comic and animation writer Dwayne McDuffie (Static Shock, Justice League, Damage Control, Deathlok). In it, gamers engage in one-to-two player cooperative combat with the ability to customize and master superpowers as they travel through interactive and destructible environments.
