DirecTV Buys ReplayTV

DirecTV Buys ReplayTV

Satellite TV operator DirecTV has inked a deal to aquire most of the assets of ReplayTV from its current corporate owner, Japan’s D&M Holdings, Inc.

“Although we valued this asset and the business was profitable, the sale of ReplayTV to DirecTV makes the most sense for this business, its employees and us,” said D&M Holdings chair and CEO Eric C. Evans, in a statement. “We believe this transaction is a positive development for ReplayTV and this sale allows D&M to further direct our focus on building our brands and executing our growth and acquisition strategies.”

The Digital Home is Almost Here

By Michael Greeson, CEO, Co-Founder of The Diffusion Group

The Shot Heard Round the World

In a moment that sent shockwaves through the personal technology industry, Sonos CEO John MacFarlane told the BBC on Tuesday that he thinks the ‘digital home’ is still a decade away from becoming a reality. This pointed comment was picked up by hundreds of electronic and print publications… and not a day after I was speaking with a client on why the concept of the ‘digital home’ is wearing thin. I’m quite familiar with MacFarlane’s message – it’s one TDG has been sharing with its clients for several years.

ReplayTV PC Edition to ‘Redefine’ DVRs

ReplayTV today announced ReplayTV PC Edition, the company’s long-anticipated DVR software for PCs. ReplayTV PC Edition promises users “the ultimate DVR experience,” combining an intuitive interface with multi-room networking capabilities and quick searching tools.

“For many consumers, their PCs are the center of their entertainment life for music photos and the Internet. And with the PC experiencing exponential growth as an entertainment platform, it’s natural that TV and DVR will be a central experience on the PC. We’ve created an affordable DVR that lets everyone in the home enjoy TV on the computer. We at ReplayTV consider ourselves true ‘TV fanatics,’ and after seven years in the DVR business, our new PC Edition is everything we’ve always wanted to provide for our customers

ReplayTV to Make PC DVR Software for 2006

DVR maker ReplayTV has announced that in 2006 it will begin selling softwareenabling PCs to record live television in conjunction with Hauppauge Computer Works WinTV-PVR add-on TV tuners.

ReplayTV has been working to restructure itself out of the hardware business and into the software and services market. Like rival TiVo, ReplayTV built its business selling set-top DVR units and associated services to enable easy recording and management of shows. However (like rival TiVo the company has also been struggling to succeed on the hardware side in the face of aggressive competition from cable and satellite providers. Although ReplayTV says its hardware business is now solidly profitable, the company says it should complete sale of all remaining ReplayTV 5500 units by the end of 2005, marking the company’s transformation out of the hardware market.

The TiVo 30-Second Commercial Skip Hack

Quote from the article at eCoustics:

“One of the religious differences between TiVo and ReplayTV owners is how they fast forward through commercials. While TiVo’s  button will get you through those intrusive breaks soon enough, it requires some trained skill to manipulate those  and  buttons while keeping a keen eye and trusting your instincts to anticipate the end of the commercials. ReplayTV, on the other hand, has a “30-second skip” button, timed specifically for skipping through commercials. Since television commercials are traditionally a multiple of 30 seconds long, ReplayTV owners just hit the “30-second skip” button three to five times to render commercials only a minor annoyance.”

ReplayTV Multi-Unit Service Discount

In addition, consumers with multiple active ReplayTV DVR units who currently subscribe via the monthly service will also be eligible for this new discounted price (on up to five additional units).

“ReplayTV offers the world’s most powerful DVR at a great value, and now we are proud to offer our customers an even greater value,” said ReplayTV President, Bernie Sepaniak.  “Our discounted monthly subscription rate provides an added incentive to take advantage of our room-to-room video streaming and many other advanced networking features, in addition to providing a discount to our loyal customers.”

ReplayTV Announces Rebate Program

The program, which runs through September 30, offers new purchasers of ReplayTV 5500 DVRs the following rebates: $50 for the 40-hour RTV5504 ($149.99 suggested retail price); $100 for the 80-hour RTV5508 ($299.99); $100 for the 160-hour RTV5516 ($449.99); and $200 for the 320-hour RTV5532 ($799.99).

Consumers may elect to purchase the ReplayTV program-listing service for a $12.95 monthly fee, or choosing to pay one lifetime service fee of $299.

ReplayTV said the following retailers will be among those participating in the program: Amazon.com, Buy.com, Circuit City, CompUSA, The Good Guys, Fry’s, J&R Music World, Magnolia, Tweeter and other authorized ReplayTV dealers. The rebate offer is also valid for purchases of new 5500 Series DVRs made directly through ReplayTV’s Web site (www.replaytv.com.)

ReplayTV Service Charge Angers Customers

An untold number of customers recently took advantage of a dramatic price drop for ReplayTV’s lowest-end model, thinking the $149 deal included three years of the service that’s required for the devices to work.

Now, some are furious, finding their service has been disconnected and that they will probably have to pay additional fees to reactivate it.

“It’s almost like buying a car and having the car later stop working, saying you can’t drive it anymore unless you give us more money,” said Eric Maur, 26, of Kaneohe, Hawaii.
