In response to the twenty page note put out yesterday by Encyclopedia Britannica regarding issues it had with scientific journal Nature’s December comparison study of the former’s science journal entries versus those of Wikipedia, the publication has posted its own two page response in which it defends its position and says it will not retract its original findings.

ViewSonic Debuts 2ms VX922 LCD Monitor
ViewSonic’s new VX922 19-inch LCD monitor features a lightening fast 2ms response rate across the entire color scale. These specs are music to a gamer’s ear. This means that hardcore gamers will be able to get near-CRT quality response times from an LCD monitor.
The VX922 is the first desktop display to combine ViewSonic’s proprietary Dynamic Structure and Amplified Impulse video response acceleration technologies to support rates of up to 500 frames per second across the entire color scale. This advancement produces superior front-of-screen performance for motion video and eliminates ghosting, a problem caused when the tiny pixels creating an image take too long to switch on and off.
JBL’s New Studio L Series Speakers
JBL Studio L Series loudspeakers offer expanded installation options, and feature a contemporary design that complements most décors and home entertainment installations.
The Studio L Series includes two wall-mount/bookshelf monitors (models L810, L820); a compact bookshelf loudspeaker (model L830); two floorstanding towers (models L880 and L890); two dedicated centerchannel loudspeakers (models LC1 and the wall-mountable LC2) and a 12-inch, 600-watt powered subwoofer (model L8400P). Prices for the Studio L Series range from $550 to $1,398 per pair (SRP).
Best Buy to Eliminate Rebates
“In response to customer complaints, Best Buy Co. Inc., the world’s largest electronics retailer, promised Friday to eliminate mail-in rebates within two years. Best Buy’s rivals, including CircuitCity Stores and CompUSA, are expected to follow suit.
“Our customers are telling us they just hate the process,” said Ron Boire, executive vice president and general merchandise manager at Best Buy.”
We love to hear this, but the question is whether customers will still get discounts on the products they pay for. Will the savings you would get from a rebate still be passed on in one form or another?
ViewSonic Unveils Their Fastest LCD’s Yet
With typical “fast-response” displays on the market today having an average gray-to-gray (or intermediate level) response time of 30 to 35ms, ViewSonic’s Xtreme LCD lineup provides response time performance up to 8 times faster. They are ideal for extreme gaming, viewing DVDs, watching television, and even traditional computer usage–such as rapidly scrolling content within a Web site or a document.
“Achieving the best results with gaming, streaming video and motion application usage has long been the domain of CRT technology,” said Jennifer Gallo, research analyst, IDC. “With manufacturers incorporating better technology, such as faster response times, we should see more of a shift toward LCD displays for these demanding applications.”
Office Depot And HP Offer Recycling Program
The program, which runs from July 18 through September 6, 2004(1), will leverage HP’s electronics recycling expertise and Office Depot’s retail presence to offer consumer and business customers the most comprehensive, convenient and environmentally responsible electronics recycling service available.
Office Depot and HP will collect and recycle a broad range of information technology and digital entertainment products from any manufacturer, including desktops, notebooks, keyboards, mice, printers, scanners, handhelds, digital cameras, fax machines, desktop copiers, flat panel displays, monitors, TVs (27″ or smaller), TV/VCR combos and cell phones. All products collected from Office Depot stores will be recycled at HP’s U.S. recycling facilities in Roseville, Calif. and near Nashville, Tenn.
Parasound introduces the model C 70
Installers often specify two-channel ceiling speakers to make their jobs easier when installing speakers in zones where both left and right channels must be routed to only one speaker, but inherentdesign flaws in conventional two-channel designs often lead to significant performance sacrifices.
“Our goal,†says Parasound president, Richard Schram, “was to make a two-channel speaker which would sound identical to our C 65. However, this was easier said than done! We soon learned that the typical dual-tweeter, dual-voice-coil-woofer configuration had inherent flaws. With two tweeters, the mid and high frequencies from one tweeter reinforce and cancel the mid and high frequencies from the other tweeter, causing very jagged and fatiguing frequency response peaks and dips. Tonal quality varies immensely as you move around the room.
Canton introduces Movie CD-1 speaker system
The package consists of four identical aluminum microspeakers, a matched horizontal center-channel, and small but powerful subwoofer.
Unlike many subwoofer-satellite mini-systems, the Movie CD-1 models are far more than just smaller speakers. Canton engineering and design advances in driver, circuitry, and cabinet design give the CD-1 satellites a frequency response of 80 Hz to 25 kHz from a speaker that measures just over 5-inches tall, and under 4-inches deep and wide. Among the advances that allow this feat are a new, proprietary 3-inch aluminum woofer, high-integrity aluminum housing, a 3.6 kHz crossover network, and a sophisticated passive filter circuit which blocks unwanted low-frequency signals that can generate harmonic distortions.
