That’s All Folks: Circuit City’s Final Closing is March 8

After struggling through reorganization and store closures, electronics retailer was unable to pull itself back into business over the lackluster 2008 holiday season, and announced in mid-January the whole chain would be liquidated. Now, the retailer has reached its end-game, announcing that its remaining store locations will close permanently on March 8, 2009.

Some stores have already shut down because they’re run through their inventory; otherwill keep up the going-out-of-business sale that began on January 17 up until the last minute. In addition, the company recently struck a deal with Bell Canada to take over Circuit City’s Canadian operations, which includes over 750 The Source stores, operated under Circuit City subsidiary InterTAN Canada.

Best Buy to Offer Apple iPhone 3G

Mega-retailer Best Buy has struck a deal to become the first independent retailer to offer Apple’s iPhone 3G. iPhones will go on sale at Best Buy on September 7; of course, they will also remain available through Apple and AT&T.

“The iPhone has changed the way people think about their mobile phones, and we are delighted to help more customers get their hands on this revolutionary product,” said Best Buy president and CEO Brian J. Dunn,in a statement. “Our Best Buy Mobile employees have the training and expertise to deliver the best experience possible for our customers—from the initial purchase through the life of their iPhones.”

Dell Expands Chinese Retail Presence

Computer maker Dell is expanding its retail efforts in overseas markets, announcing today that it has made a deal to sell notebook and desktop computers through China’s second-largest electronics retailer, Suning. At the same time, leading Chinese electronics retailer Gome will be doubling the number of locations that offer Dell gear. The deals will make Dell computing products available in many of China’s major urban areas through Hontu stores, as well as PC retailer stores like Wuxing, Meicheng, Heng Chang, and Heyong.

CompUsa Closing Half Its Stores

Technology retailer CompUSA has announced (MS Word format) a major structuring which will see the company closing 126 of its retail outlets over the next 60 to 90 days in an effort to focus more resources on its best performing locations and improve the company’s overall financial status.

The company operates about 225 stores throughout the United States and Puerto Rico, and is owned by Mexican billionaire Carlos Sim, recently ranked as the third richest man in the world.
