Apple Profits Rise By 36 Percent

Apple has announced its first quarter figures, and they’re staggering good. Steve Jobs’ baby saw its profits rise by 30% over the same period in 2007,to $1.05 billion.   A lot of that would seem to be on the back of computer sales – up 51% at 2,298,000 – and international sales, which totalled 44% of the company revenue. 1.7million of the much-vaunted iPhones were shipped, but the iPod only enjoyed a 1% rise in sales to 10,644,000.  Apple CEO Steve Jobs reported:   "We’re delighted to report 43% revenue growth and the strongest March quarter revenue and earnings in Apple’s history. With over $17bn in revenue for thefirst half of our fiscal year, we have strong momentum to launch some terrific new products in the coming quarters."   However good these figures, though, Apple is already dour about nextquarter, predicting just $7.2 billion in total revenue.

Next-Gen DVDs to Boom Despite Format War?

A new report entitled Blu-ray and HD DVD Disc Technologies: Pursuit of a New Standard from the Santa Clara Consulting Group (don’t bother with the Web site unless you need a laugh) makes some pretty bold predictions about the direction of the broad “blue laser” next generation DVD market. Despite the looming format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray, the anticipated sales revenue of next-generation DVD players, game consoles, PC drives, and related media (like games and movies) will exceed $2 billion during 2006, and account for some $28 billion by 2010.

(Yep: $2 billion. This year. 2006.)

FCC Says VoIP Must Pay Universal Access Fee

The Federal Communication Commission has ruled (PDF) that companies which provide Internet-based telephony (VoIP) services must pay a portion of their revenue to the Universal Service Fund, which subsidized telephone and emergency services to low-income and rural areas, as well as communications and Internet access for hospitals, emergency services, schools, and libraries.

Under the interim regulations adopted by the FCC, interconnected VoIP providers

Wireline Revenues Losing to Wireless, VoIP

Research firm In-Stat reports that revenues for wireline services are in steady decline in the United States, and that growth in wireline broadband services like DSL is not enough to offset declining revenue from wireline voice services.

“Voice services, which have experienced persistent pressure from wireless alternatives, are increasingly being challenged by VoIP solutions,” said In-Stat analyst David Lemelin “Long distance revenues are increasingly becoming irrelevant as ‘any distance’ calling plans for wireline and wireless services take hold.”

Overall, In-Stat forecasts overall wireline revenues

Online Media to Earn $2 Billion by 2006

A new forecast from Ireland’s Research and Markets predicts the worldwide market for downloadable and streaming media will reach $1.38 billion in 2005, and climb to $2 billion in 2006. Apple Has One of Best Quarters Ever

Apple stock holders should be happy campers right now. Just released numbers regarding third quarter earnings reveal the scrappy Silicon Valley company to have what Steve Jobs says is one of their best quarters ever.

Specifically, according to a company press release, the company posted a quarterly net profit of $320 million and revenue of $3.52 billion. This compares to a profit of $61 million and revenue of $2.01 billion this same time last year. The jump represents revenue growth of 75 percent and net profit growth of 425 percent.

TiVo Continues To Sink, Losing More Money

“The company said it met the goal of doubling the number of subscribers to more than 3 million, and noted that growing revenue, combined with planned cuts in acquisition spending this year, will help put TiVo into the black by the fourth quarter.

The Alviso-based maker of digital television recorders Thursday said it lost $34 million, or 42 cents a share, on revenue of $60 million in the fiscal fourth quarter ended Jan. 31.

Analysts were expecting a loss of 43 cents a share, excluding items, according to Thomson First Call.”

Worldwide PDA Shipments Grew 7 Percent

An increased average selling price (ASP) drove worldwide PDA revenue to a record $4.3 billion in 2004, a 16.7 percent increase from the year before. In the fourth quarter of 2004, the ASP of PDAsreached $353, up 9.4 percent from 2003.

Another factor for the increased revenue is that nearly half of all PDAs are now purchased, or reimbursed, by enterprises.”
