Amazon Dropping Affiliates Over Taxes

Amazon Dropping Affiliates Over Taxes

Internet sales giant Amazon has long made use of affiliates round the country, who make money whenever someone clicks on a link from their site to make a purchase at Amazon.

However, that’s changing in several areas, and in the last week Amazon has severed links with affiliates in North Carolina, Rhode Island, and Hawaii after those states passed legislation that approves collecting sales tax on online transactions.

But the story really began in New York, when a judge ruled that affiliates were essentially the same as having a physical presence in the state, and that the state could collect taxes. Amazon is fighting that ruling in court, although it is collecting the tax.

Supposed Craigslist Killer Gives Not Guilty Plea

Supposed Craigslist Killer Gives Not Guilty Plea

He’s been dubbed the ‘Craigslist Killer.’ It’s alleged that 22-year-old Philip Markoff met masseuse Julissa Brisman after she advertised on classified ad site Craigislist, then murdered her on April 14.

He’s also been accused of the robbery of a prostitute in Las Vegas on April 10, and the robbery of a stripper in Rhode Island on April 16, and speculation is that he met both of them on the site, too.

In court he’s pleaded not guilty to Brisman’s murder, and is unlikely to stand trial for another 12 months, according to AFP.

Jury Dings Microsoft $388 Mln in Anti-Piracy Patent Infringement Case

Jury Dings Microsoft $388 Mln in Anti-Piracy Patent Infringement Case

It’s not unusual for companies in the technology industry to be embroiled in any number of patent lawsuits, and some of the litigation can drag out for years as the highly complex procedures and negotiations play out. But every now and then a case goes to trial…and the technology giants don’t always come out the winner. Yesterday, a Rhode Island jury found Microsoft had violated a patent held by Uniloc that related to protecting programs against software piracy…and the jury was not pleased with Microsoft’s conduct in the matter, awarding Uniloc some $388 million, double the $194 million in estimated damages cited in the suit.

Dell Settles Finance Claims for $3.35 Mln

Dell Settles Finance Claims for $3.35 Mln

Computer maker Dell has agreed to pay some $3.35 million to settle 34 states’ allegations that the company’s warranty, financing, and rebate offers were deceptive and misled consumers. The agreement has Dell paying $1.5 million into a restitution account; impacted consumers will be able to submit claims for compensation. The other $1.85 million will go towards the states’ legal costs.

“More than the money, this agreement provides profoundly important business practice reforms,” said Connecticut attorney general Richard Blumenthal, in a statement. “No more bait-and-switch financing—offers touting zero-interest that become surprise high-interest charges or astounding late penalties. Our strong coalition of states will closely monitor and enforce this agreement, which has been reached with Dell’s cooperation.”

Akamai: China and U.S. Lead in Net Attacks

Internet distribution company Akamai has issued the first of what it claims will be an ongoing series of State of the Internet reports. (Registration required to view the full text.) In the report, the company finds that during the first quarter of 2008, China and the United States accounted for about 30 percent of all “attack traffic” on the Internet—but, surprisingly, a lot of that traffic was directed at network ports and services that haven’t had major vulnerabilities for several years, suggesting the number of unpatched, still-vulnerable Windows systems connected to the Internet worldwide is still significant.

Sony BMG Settles with 39 States

Following immediately on its settlements with Texas and California, music label Sony BMG has agreed to pay some $4.25 million as part of settlement agreements with 39 U.S. states and the District of Columbia regarding copy protection software included on some of the labels music CDs which caused computers to malfunction and exposed users to security threats.

Verizon Yahoo! for FiOS is now available for Verizon customers in parts of California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas and Virginia.

Verizon Yahoo! for FiOS, the two companies said, combines broadband connection speeds of up to 30 megabits per second (Mbps) downstream and 5 Mbps upstream with a wide variety of premium Yahoo! features. Verizon Gives Speed Boost To DSL

Verizon’s new DSL service offers a maximum connection speed of 3 Mbps (megabits per second) downstream and 768 Kbps (kilobits per second) upstream and is available today in 12 New England and mid-Atlantic states and in the District of Columbia. The company plans to offer 3Mbps DSL service later this year in the remaining 11 states where it now offers up to 1.5 Mbps DSL service.

“Today’s broadband customers are looking for higher speeds to support working from home, multi-player gaming and e-mailing large files like photographs, but most of all, they’re looking for a great value,” said John Wimsatt, vice president of broadband for Verizon Online. “Now they have an additional, super-fast option from Verizon, with some of the industry’s best broadband prices.”

Verizon Granted Injunction Against Spammer

Verizon Wireless today announced it was granted a permanent, legal injunction against Rhode Island resident Jacob Brown, a known ‘spammer’ who knowingly executed a systematic spam attack on wirelessphones owned by Verizon Wireless customers. United States District Judge in Trenton, New Jersey Mary L. Cooper permanently enjoined Jacob Brown from sending further spam to Verizon Wirelesscustomers.

Brown and his cohorts distributed unsolicited short text messages (also referred to as ‘spam’) offering mortgage loans and directing individuals to adult Web sites. Additionally, these individuals ‘spoofed’ and disguised themselves by using IP addresses of innocent persons to distribute messages, creating identification protection for the guilty and an undercurrent of insecurity for innocent people. The company, which has long championed a customer’s right to privacy and ‘spam-free’ wireless environment, believed legal action was necessary to deter future wireless phone ‘attacks’ that force customers to pay for unsolicited commercial spam messages each time one reaches their phone.
