Some folks might still be thinking that the idea of mobile applications is just a flash in the pan, but there’s a reason Research in Motion, Microsoft, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, and other industry players are all hustling to get their own application stores up and running: in the year since Apple introduced its App Store for the iPhone and iPod touch, users have downloaded more than 1.5 billion applications. Search’s Up, Dude: Google Shows Off New Tools
At its second annual “Searchology” event at its Mountain View California headquarters, search engine giant Google showed off new tools and capabilities it hopes will augment its almost universally-used Internet search feature, enabling users to get the information they want more quickly, whether that’s fast facts, the latest information, or producing automated search reports.
First up, Google unveiled Search Options, a new feature that’s available immediately on the main Google search engine that enables users to quickly categorize search results by format (for instance, forum postings, videos, or product reviews) as well as by date. Search Options also provides ways of viewing search results separate from Google’s famous “list of links,” including a timeline view and a Flash-based “wonder wheel” that shows queries and terms related to a current search.
Apple Can Kill iPhone Apps
In an interview published yesterday in The Wall Street Journal, Apple boss Steve Jobs confirmed that Apple has the ability to remove applications from users’ iPhones. However, he insists, it’s all for the good and would only be used in extreme circumstances – if, for example, the company inadvertently sold a malicious program through it’s App Store.
"Hopefully, we never have to pull that lever, but we would be irresponsible not to have a lever like that to pull," he told the newspaper.
Apple’s iPhone Store Rings Up Downloads
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said he’d “never seen anything like this in my career for software” when describing the first month of sales via his company’s new App Store for the iPhone and iPod touch. And what is he seeing? According to Jobs, users have downloaded more than 60 million programs during the App Store’s first month, with total sales so far of about $30 million dollars. At that rate, the App Store could generate business of $360 million a year—and that’s assuming it doesn’t grow as the iPhone gains momentum around the world.
