Gateway Names New CEO

Computer maker Gateway has ended more than half a year of hazy direction and undefined leadership by naming former Arrow executive J. Edward Coleman as its new chief executive officer, taking over from Rick Snyder who had been serving as the company’s interim CEO since February 2006 following the resignation of Wayne Inouye.

Coleman most recently worked for Arrow Electronics, where he served as senior video president and then president of Arrow Enterprise Computing Solutions. Before Arrow, Coleman was CEO of CompuCom from 1999 to 2004, and had previously occupied leadership positions at Computer Sciences Corporation and at IBM. All told, Coleman brings more than 30 years’ experience in the technology industry to Gateway’s top job.

Gateway Offered $450 Mln for Retail Biz

eMachine’s founder—and number two Gateway shareholder—Lap Shun “John” Hui has made an unsolicited offer of $450 million for computer maker Gateway’s retail operations. Hui sold budget PC maker eMachines to Gateway back in 2004 for $290 million; Hui current owns Joui International, which develops office products.

Gateway CEO Inouye Steps Down

Gateway’s CEO Wayne Inouye has stepped down, effective immediately, in favor of Gateway board chairman and director Rick Snyder, while the company initiates a search for a new CEO. The move comes as Gateway posted its first GAAP profit since 200 and increased its year-to-year operating income by $643 million in 2005.

Inouye took over the company following Gateway’s March 2004 purchase of eMachines, and is credited with helping rebuild and stabilize the company as it faced increased competition from direct marketer Dell and giant computer maker Hewlett-Packard looking to revitalize itself in consumer and business markets. He leaves the company to “pursue other interests,” which is classic corporate-speak for “golf and maybe pondering a memoir,” but in this case, Inouye will be staying on in an advisory capacity during the CEO search.
