Students Develop New 3D Computer Mouse

Five students at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute have cooked up a new way to interact with computers, which they’ve dubbed the MagicMouse. The mouse brings new meaning to “point and click” by allowing users to actually point at objects on a screen using their index finger and manipulate them, even in 3D, using only the motion of the finger.

Record Labels Look To Ringtones For Revenue

The major record labels are jumping on the ring tones bandwagon, a market segment that last year brought in $3.1 billion worldwide, according to mobile market research firm Consect.

Warner Brothers Records has recently started running commercials on MTV and MTV2 for a set of voice-greeting ring tones recorded by members of the punk band Green Day. According to a New York Times article, executives in the music and cellular industries said it was the first time a record label had paid to run its own ads for ring tones in the United States market.

Russian Online Extortion Group Broken Up

The Russian extortion ring is accused of forcing online betting sites to pay them hundreds of thousands of dollars in order to protect them from “zombie” computers.

The group threatened sports betting and gambling sites with crippling denial of service attacks, with the thought that it would be less expensive for the sites to pay the protection money than to have their operations stopped for a significant amount of time.

According to a PC World report, three men, ages 21, 22, and 24, were taken into custody this week in separate arrests in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the Saratov and Stavropol regions of southwest Russia.

Cell Phone Ring Tone Sales Top $3 Billion

The worldwide sale of ring tones, which started as a marketing gimmick for music labels and mobile phone companies, is roughly equivalent to 10 percent of the $32.2 billion global music market.

Replacing the standard phone ring with a few bars from Elvis or a favorite TV show was first popularized by tech-savvy teenagers in the late 1990s.

The subsequent success of ring tones is a rare bit of good news for the music industry which has been stung by Internet piracy and fickle fans who would rather spend their money on video games than compact discs.

Blue Circle MR1200 music ring review

Quote from the review at eCoustics:

“I had the opportunity to compare the Music Ring with Chang Lightspeed’s CLS 9600 MK II power line filter which is priced the same as the MR1200. While the Chang did improve the sound of my system compared to the unfiltered AC coming out of my wall, it wasn’t even in the same league as the Music Ring when you compare the overall improvement it made to the music

I was so impressed with the Music Ring that it has now taken its place in my reference system. Given the system-wide benefits the Music Ring offers, you owe it to yourself to hear what the Music Ring can do. “
