Microsoft Rolls Out Red Carpets for Beatles, Other Stars at E3

Microsoft Rolls Out Red Carpets for Beatles, Other Stars at E3

True to rumor, there was no shortage of star power at Microsoft’s wiz-bang press conference this year – a return to form for the conference that has been so played down in recent years. Microsoft managed to round up Tony Hawk, Steven Spielberg and no lesser celebrities than the surviving Beatles themselves for its Monday morning press conference.

After debuting the cinematic trailer for the Beatles Rock Band and announcing a handful of the songs to be included, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr both bounced out from back stage on queue. Neither seemed to know quite what to say. “The game is good, the graphics are very good, and we were great,” Ringo joked. They stuck around for only a minute, wise cracking and paling around, before disappearing backstage again.

The Beatles to Go Digital with Rock Band

The Beatles to Go Digital with Rock Band

The Beatles’ Apple Corps has struck a deal with MTV parent company Viacom and Harmonix to bring the Beatles into the digital music age for the first time. And it will be a grand entrance: The Fab Four will be the the subject of a special edition of the popular video game Rock Band. Although no pricing or firm release date information has been set, the game was conceived in conjunction with surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, along with Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison, as an "unprecedented, experiential progression" through the music and history of the Beatles. It should debut in 2009.

Bill Gates? Is Gone: What Comes Next?

Bill was and is unique in this industry and changed a lot over the course of time he ran Microsoft. He started out as one of the barbarians challenging the hated status quo and eventually became a part of the new hated status quo for the following generation. He, and Microsoft, provide a cautionary tale for Google in that just as Google has positioned itself with its “do no evil” model as the anti-Microsoft, Microsoft positioned itself as the anti-IBM and eventually became much of what it didn’t like as it aged.

Beatles Inching Closer to iTunes?

Beatles Inching Closer to iTunes?

Almost two years ago, Apple (formerly Apple Computer) and the Beatles’ Apple Corps were involved in a long-running trademark dispute over the use of the Apple trademark. (Originally, Apple Computer had made an agreement with Apple Corp that would have kept it out of the music business; a lack of foresight from Apple Corps limited the restriction to physical media, clearing the way for Apple’s iTunes store without infringement.) One result of the very public trademark trial was that former Apple Corps manager Neil Aspinal revealed that Apple Corps was in the process of remastering the Beatles’ entire back catalog for digital distribution. Apple Corps is also known to have approached companies like Apple and Microsoft with offers of high-priced, exclusive windows of opportunity to make the Beatles’ music available for download; obviously, there weren’t any takes because, aside from some limited music instructional material, the Beatles’ music is not legally available via download.
