Google Surges On a Strong Third Quarter

Google Surges On a Strong Third Quarter

The economy might be falling, but Google seems unstoppable in its rise. Yesterday the company reported third quarter revenue of $5.54 billion; that’s up 31% on the same quarter last year and a 3% rise over last quarter.

In a statement Google CEO Eric Schmidt said:

"We had a good third quarter with strong traffic and revenue growth across all of our major geographies thanks to the underlying strength of our core search and ads business. The measurability and ROI of search-based advertising remain key assets for Google. While we are realistic about the poor state of the global economy, we will continue to manage Google for the long term, driving improvements to search and ads, while also investing in future growth areas such as enterprise, mobile, and display."

And Now Google’s Selling TV Ads

Google has long been a huge player in online advertising. Its AdWords program has practically become de rigueur on any site carrying ads, and the company is famous for making fortunes—many, many fortunes—on paid keyword-based search advertising. In 2006, Google began extending the reach of its ad platform into radio, and today the company has announced a new partnership with NBC Universal that will have the company implementing its Google TV Ads platform on NBC cable networks like Sci-Fi, Oxygen, MSNBC, and CNBC. If the deal works out, the partnership can extend to other NBC properties in the future.

Nielsen NetRatings Opens to MRC Audit

It’s no secret that the advertising industry is driven by numbers and statistics: page impressions, viewership, size of audience, readership estimates, circulation, numbers of viewers, ROI, CPM, and a passel of other acronyms, metrics, and confusing numbers. While we in the technology industry are used to citing and tossing off many statistics about how many people use particular technologies, play particular games, or own particular devices, the fact is that the numbers cited in the vast majority of market research reports are, at best, well-informed guesses. You’ve probably heard the aphorism, "There’s lies, damn lies, and statistics" used as a quick way to sum up the persuasive power of a little numerical analysis to bolster an argument…even when the numbers and the analysis are often quite questionable? Add to that the pressure-cooker environment of ad sales, tight deadlines, and careers hanging in the balance, and you’ll often find hand-waving, smoke, and mirrors passed off as cold hard facts.

In-Flight Cell Services Not Profitable?

Some of us would be overjoyed to being able to use in-flight cellular services (high-speed internet, phone) while others would probably enjoy some quiet. In any event, Airlines are considering adding these services to their planes in an effort to attract customers and update their amenities.

A report released today suggests that deployment of in-flight cellular could produce revenues of more than $600 million from 4500 equipped planes by 2016. The problem is that they ROI would be less than $200 million from under 1800 equipped planes.

2005 Online Ad Revenue Topped $12.5 Bln

If you want to know where the money is online, all you have to do is follow the ads. A new report from the Interactive Advertising Bureau estimates that total online advertising revenues for 2005 exceeded $12.5 billion, which would represent a 30 percent increase over the record $9.6 billion spent on online promotion in 2004. Online ad revenues in the fourth quarter of 2005 alone topped $3.4 billion, marking the quarter as having the highest online ad spending ever recorded and the second consecutive quarter to exceed $3 billion.
