Roku Introduces Two New Streaming Video Players: The Roku SD and Roku HD-XR

Set-top box maker Roku was the first out the gate with streaming Netflix movies and television shows to living room TVs via their original set-top box. Roku has since added Amazon Video-on-Demand and MLB.tv, and today Roku expanded its product line with two new set-top boxes—the Roku SD and Roku HD-XR, each with Wi-Fi capability and the HD-XR offering high-definition output. Roku now offers three set-top boxes with Internet streaming capability—the original Roku is the Roku HD—and they’re all available at consumer-friendly prices.

Roku Player Gets MLB.TV

The $99 Roku set-top box—which also lets Netflix subscribers tap into Netflix streaming content and Amazon Video On Demand—has issued a new software update that lets MB.TV subscribers access live and pre-recorded Major League Baseball programming via MLB.tv. Roku owners just need to update their Roku software, if they haven’t received it already; once the software is installed, users can log into their MLB Premium account and enter a code latching the account to their Roku player. Folks interested in trying out the service can subscribe to the remainder of the 2009 season for $35.

Roku has been beta testing the service for a few months, but has finally thrown open the doors for all customers.

Roku and Tatung to Collaborate

As part of the arrangement between the companies, Tatung has license rights to the SoundBridge product line and will distribute the network music players in Asia. Roku SoundBridge is the network music player that lets consumers listen to digital music and Internet radio anywhere in the house. The worldwide sales of Tatung group companies totaled US$7.5 billion in 2004.

We have reviewed several of Roku’s products here on Designtechnica and can safely say the company is very forward thinking. The Roku HD1000 is a high definition picture viewer and was the first of its kind when we reviewed it back in 2004. You could wirelessly view pictures stored on other computers throughout their home.

Roku SoundBridge M2000 Review

Quote from the review:

“The Roku SoundBridge is the best looking networked media player we have seen to-date. It is incredibly easy to setup and is compatible with a large number of music services and server software. If Roku had added the ability to play shared drives or folders on your network, our score could have been higher. We find absolutely no reason for them to leave this feature out.

Roku SoundBridge Gets Free Software Update

Roku today released a new version of free software for all Roku SoundBridge network music players. The new Roku SoundBridge 2.1 software adds support for RealNetworks’ award-winning Rhapsody digitalmusic service. Now, Roku customers with a Rhapsody subscription can effortlessly browse their personal Rhapsody library by artist, album, and song title, or quickly review the custom radio stationsand playlists they have created using Rhapsody, and enjoy this music on their home stereos. With Rhapsody compatibility, Roku SoundBridge is the only network music player to seamlessly work with allWindows Media Audio (WMA) based services.

Just last month Roku added support for Windows Media Connect, Windows Media Digital Rights Management 10 and Windows Media Player 10. Roku SoundBridge can play any song in Windows Media Audio (WMA) format, including protected WMA content from music services like Napster, MSN Music and Wal-Mart. Roku SoundBridge is also part of the Microsoft PlaysForSure logo program, which gives consumers an easy way to identify devices and services verified to work together.

Switch To Mars Time Gives Advantage

Perhaps their clocks were already messed up and they thought it was April, but Roku Labs has posted a humorous press release on their site. The statement says that Roku has switched to Mars time, which will provide them with an “extra 39 minutes” per day.

We have to give credit to them for being a company that seems to have fun. It is important to work in an environment you enjoy and if this press release is any indication of their attitude, it would seem to be an enjoyable place to work.

ATI powers Roku HD1000 media player

Introduced just last month and now in North American consumer electronic stores, the Roku HD1000 connects to any HDTV and provides a high-resolution canvas for digital media such as photos, art, music and dynamic media applications.

XILLEON’s architecture is responsible for powering many of the 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i true high-definition features of the Roku HD1000 including LiveArt, which brings motion to art. Through high-definition MPEG2 video, LiveArt motifs such as a field of vibrant orange poppies blowing in the wind, or a rippling deep blue mountain lake, can turn any HDTV into a window to the world. Additional LiveArt such as the Roku Aquarium takes advantage of XILLEON’s real-time high-definition MPEG decoder.
