Michael Dell Resumes Role as Dell CEO

Computer maker Dell Computer has announced that founder Michael Dell has resumed the role of the company’s chief executive officer. Michael Dell is replacing Kevin Rollins, who is leaving the firm immediately after taking th CEO seat in 2004.

“The Board believes that Michael’s vision and leadership are critical to building Dell’s leadership in the technology industry for the long-term,” said Samuel A. Nunn, presiding director of Dell’s Board in a statement. “There is no better person in the world to run Dell at this time than the man who created the Direct Model and who has built this company over the last 23 years.”

Dell: PC Industry Growth Slower Than Hoped

“In an annual briefing for Wall Street analysts, Rollins pointed to market research data that forecasts 10 percent growth in first-quarter global PC unit shipments, down from average growth of 16percent during the prior six quarters.

“As we have come into (the first quarter), it’s become clear things are a bit slower (than last year), a little bit slower than maybe we had even thought,” Rollins said, referring to the 10 percent forecast by research group IDC.

On Wednesday, Dell left its own revenue and outlook profit unchanged for its first quarter ending later this month, saying it expects revenue of $13.4 billion, up 16 percent from a year ago, and 37 cents a share in profit, up 32 percent. “

“We have been studying AMD closely. Some of their products are more advanced,” Rollins told reporters during a conference call following the company’s third-quarter earnings report.

“We have not announced using any AMD products,” he added. “

Dell remains one of the only computer manufacturers to remain a 100% Intel shop according to Reuters. But with AMD being the first to market with a 64-bit processor and with Intel’s woes lately, perhaps its time for a change.
