Google Earth Rebuilds Ancient Rome

The glory that was Rome lives again in 3D splendor in Google Earth. The popular service has reconstructed the most famous city of the ancient world, giving visitors a chance to zoom around 6,700 buildings and more than 250 place marks. The 200 buildings already well known to scholars have been rendered as faithfully as possibly.

Google teamed with Virginia University and Past Perfect Productions on the venture, and the 3D models are based on a model of the city known as the Plastico di Roma Antica, which stands in Rome’s Museum of Roman Civilization, according to the BBC.

HBO Brings a la Carte Programming to iTunes

If you’re too cheap to spring for a $160-a-month cable package, but still want to catch Tony Soprano knocking off a few guys now and then, HBO now offers a slightly more affordable way to access its programming: iTunes.  HBO and Apple jointly announced on Tuesday that many of the cable channel’s programs have arrived at the iTunes store for download.

Apple will initially offer six HBO series on iTunes, including The Sopranos, Deadwood, Rome, Sex and the City, Flight of the Conchords and The Wire. The former three series have episodes priced at $1.99 per episode, while the latter three cost $2.99 per episode. While full seasons are available, Apple won’t offer any discount for purchasing episodes in bulk.

Ancient Rome Comes To Life Digitally

Have you ever had the wild desire to experience ancient Rome? Thanks to a project called Rome Reborn, you might just have the chance. The Rome of 320 A.D., when the city was at the zenith of its power, has been digitally recreated in 3D.   The massive undertaking comes from the Virginia Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities. It’s been 10 years in the making, using scans of the Plastico di Roma Antica model kept at Rome’s Museum of Roman Civilisation.   More than 7,000 buildings in the model were scanned and digitally reproduced, while archaeologists offered advice on how statues would have looked in the period. Additionally, maps of Rome at the time were used to reconstruct houses, apartment buildings and even brothels.   More than that, the interiors of some 30 buildings have been recreated, including the Senate (right down to frescoes on the walls) and the Colosseum, allowing virtual tours.   In 320 A.D, Rome was under the rule of the Emperor Constantine, a massive city with over a million inhabitants, and arguably at the height of its power, the center of an empire that ranged from Britain to Asia Minor.   However appealing a digital ancient Rome might be, you won’t be able to buy it. It will be used by scholars to study the city and the period.   “This is the first step in the creation of a virtual time machine, which our children and grandchildren will use to study the history of Rome and many other great cities around the world,” announced Bernard Frischer of the Virginia Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities. However, the Institute has begun talk with Linden Labs which might make the complete digital ancient Rome available on Second Life. And that would make quite a world to explore.

Security Apps Will Be Able to Tap Vista

While meeting with a bank in Rome, Italy, today, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told Reuters the company will disclose key APIs which will enable security software developers like Symantec and McAfee to tie into the kernel in Windows Vista, as well as suppress Microsoft’s own security warnings which could be triggered by installing third-party security software.

The move neatly addresses two sources of complaint about Microsoft’s forthcoming operating systems: complaints that security technologies built into Windows Vista might violate business competition regulations in the European Union, and complaints from security software developers that Windows Vista security model would actually make using Vista more dangerous, rather than safer for consumers.
