Sony Melts Down

Sony isn’t in great shape. It just reported a mammoth $2.9 billion annual loss, the kind that typically results in some massive soul searching. The fact that Apple didn’t do that badly certainly indicates Sony could do better. This kind of financial result typically causes executives to depart, especially when Sony was forecasting a mammoth profit as late as October.

So why is Sony in the toilet, and does this mean the end of Blu-Ray, or the PlayStation 3, both of which are contributing strongly to this massive amount of red ink? Some are clearly betting PlayStation goes first.

Senators Take Aim At Spyware

The Spyblock Act will make it illegal to install software on people’s computers without their consent. Under the proposed act, companies that offer software downloads will have to tell users what the programs do and what information they collect. Internet ads generated by the software will have to be clearly labelled.

Senator Ron Wyden told the Washington Post he thought of spyware as a parasite and said that online users need to be protected.

Microsoft proposes law on junk e-mail

Like several bills already proposed or being drafted, the software giant wants increased penalties for the fraudulent practices of many spammers who peddle diet fads, get-rich-quick schemes and pornography.

But the company is also pushing for an electronic seal-of-approval system for all e-mail marketing, to ensure that legitimate marketers meet high standards and to help consumers weed out unsavory or unwanted spam.
