Spain-baed Fon has announced that its Fonera 2.0n Wi-Fi Router is now available in the U.S. market, offering improved performance along with a built-in USB hub and and reduced power requirements. Fon—which has attracted investments from the likes of Google, eBay, and British Telecom—is a little different from your average Wi-Fi router manufacturer: the idea is that folks who run a Fon Wi-Fi router also serve as a hotspot in Fon’s broader network of Wi-Fi hotspot, which may also be used by other Fon users (dubbed “foneros”); in exchange, Fon owners also get access to more than 350,000 Fon hotspots around the world, as well as partner hotspots. Users control the level of access they provide to others, and non-sharing foneros can buy passes to the Fon network.

Netgear enhances router line, adds IPTV
Netgear has added two new powerful routers to their line-up, will offer new digital streaming products (one that lets you access YouTube.com videos easily with a cool search mechanism), and has announced a new business unit that will sell direct to the small biz market. Unfortunately, the one missing item from their CES showfloor is a 450Mbps router to match the new products that D-Link and Trendnet announced this week.
According to Netgear, the 450Mbps market is still new and emerging and consumers have not necessarily requested the faster models which break the 100 Mbps barrier and may not want to pay more than $200 for a router.
Belkin Router Packs Integrated Display
If you’re the kind of person who needs a GPS unit in your car to know exactly where you are at all times, thermometers in every room of the house to know exactly how hot it is, and a bike computer that can tell you exactly how many times you pedal every minute, you may be a fan of Belkin’s latest wireless router. The N1 Vision 802.11n router has a built-in in display to let you know exactly what’s going on with your Internet connection, without ever plugging in a separate computer.

For added mobility, the D-Link Wireless Pocket Router/AP can be powered over USB if power outlets are not available.
Intel Turns Off WiFi In New Chipset
We reported late last month that Intel will be producing a new chipset featuring an integrated WiFi router. ExtremeTech is now reporting that Intel will have this feature turned off by default to prevent any sort of unauthorized access. Personally, we could do without the WiFi router altogether.
The new Grantsdale chip-set promises to be a particularly consumer-friendly product, designed to enhance playback of DVDs and provide home-theater-quality sound.
Linksys RV082 Router Gets Reviewed
Quote from the review at Toms Hardware:
“I like this router. The price : value ratio is excellent. It performs like a champ, has loads of features, and its price is very reasonable for what you get.
While I would like to see some of the quirks fixed, like not being able to set the subnet mask to what I want, but this is relatively minor compared to what the Linksys RV082 gets right. The router is easy to set up. The firewall’s custom rules are flexible. The support for VPN termination is a plus. And having the rudimentary load balancing / failover is the icing on the cake. The RV082 may be overkill for Joe six-pack, but is just the thing for power users who want big features but don’t want to pay for big iron.”
Intel’s Chipset Has Built-in Wi-Fi Router
One of its more intriguing features will be a built-in Wi-Fi router. Rather than buying and installing a separate router to set up a home wireless network, users can plug their Internet cable into the back of the PC and the computer acts as its own router, linking up with other wireless devices in the house, said Bill Leszinske, marketing and planning director for Intel’s digital home initiative.
He said that will allow people to set up their own home networks with about four clicks of a mouse button, much simpler than the procedure involved when installing a separate router.
TI Router Technology May Improve Wireless
From TI’s press release:
Until now, most dual-band routers and access points (APs) were too expensive for mass consumer adoption since they required two chipsets in order to maintain simultaneous operation. With TI´s wONE software, manufacturers can offer dual-band routers at an affordable price to the consumer market, making universal connectivity of 802.11a, 802.11g and 802.11b in the home a reality. This all-in-one router solution offers extreme flexibility and versatility to protect the end-users´ existing investments of 802.11b or 802.11g devices while technology-proofing future network applications using 802.11a.
