RSS and XML feeds might be all the rage for keeping up with your friends’ self-absorbed blog entries or self-absorbed cat photos over at Flickr, Yahoo has rolled out a beta edition of a new hosted service called “Pipes.”

Akimbo Adds RSS and Atom Programming Feeds
Video on demand provider Akimbo today said they were adding a new way for subscribers to receive alerts about the latest movies and television programs available on the service. This new method involves the use of RSS and Atom feeds.
Akimbo explained that the new feeds “automatically signal the arrival of new additions to the Akimbo Service via e-mail or an alert on a computer desktopâ€. When a desired program is found, an integration process allows the programs selected from the feeds to be downloaded directly to the subscriber’s Akimbo Player to view on television.
New Venture Fund Offers Millions for RSS
Here’s another reason to think RSS is truly hitting the big time: a group of high tech investors has come together to form RSS Investors, LP, a financial partnership with $100 million to support RSS-related Internet technology companies.
The new RSS venture fund, whose focus includes OPML and the newly proposed Microsoft extensions to RSS, will target sectors related to news aggregation, blogs and new classes of search engines. Aggregation applications which collect data in the financial and medical industries will strongly be pursued, according to a press release.

“As of February 7, 2005, Bloglines said it had over 283 million articles indexed. It first made its debut in July 2003. Its RSS service started in December 2004 in multiple languages, it claims, extends its reach to more than 500 million web surfers who comprise 60% of the world’s estimated Internet users. “
MSN’s own blog service called MSN spaces was created in December 2004 while My Yahho! provides an RSS aggregator for blogs. Look for an official announcement later today.
