Music service Ruckus tried to nip campuses’ fears of file-sharing and copyright infringement lawsuits in the bud by offering colleges and universities a way to give students legitimate access to all the music (and even music video) they could consume at a reasonable cost and in a way that would keep all the media traffic on campus networks rather than saturate Internet connections.

Ruckus: Free Music for All College Students
Ruckus Network, operators of the Ruckus digital music network designed for college students, has thrown open the doors of its service to all U.S. students. Beginning today, any U.S. student with a valid .edu email address can sign up for free, immediate access to Ruckus; previously, access had been limited to students at schools who had contractual agreements with Ruckus to provide music to their student bodies.
Ruckus Brings Warner Home Video to Campuses
Warner Home Video and digital media provider Ruckus announced today that Ruckus plans to offer Warner feature films and selected television episodes to college students using the Ruckus subscription service. With the agreement, Ruckus will be adding recent Warner releases like Batman Begins and The Dukes of Hazzard to its video-on-demand catalog, along with Warner classics and commercial successes like The Shining and The Matrix.

Let’s face it – college campuses and the students who inhabit them are bad places for those who fear for the copyrights of their music and videos. Is there a market here then to make money off of legal distribution of content to students? You bet says Ruckus, a company which is specifically dedicated towards bringing digital media and entertainment services to college campuses.
