SanDisk Sansa Clip+ Review

Summary

After making appeals to moms and tech neophytes everywhere with its ultra-simplistic SlotMusic and SlotRadio players, SanDisk returns to the land of real, full-featured MP3 players with the Sansa Clip+. Like its popular predecessor, the Sansa Clip, the Clip+ runs against the iPod Shuffles of the world with a compact and clippable (duh) profile, but makes an extra play toward practicality with the addition of a microSD slot that allows for expansion by up to 16GB.

SanDisk’s Sansa Clip+ Media Music Player Sports microSD Slot

SanDisk

SanDisk is looking to re-assert itself in the holiday gift-giving market for portable music players with the updated Sansa Clip+ portable media player, which looks to solve the problem of limited on-board storage and needing to sideload from a computer to swap out tunes by adding a microSD slot. Now users can swap music libraries on the fly with the same aplomb they’d use popping new media into a digital camera…and, conveniently, the microSD slot also supports SanDisk’s slotMusic and slotRadio cards, pre-loaded with music.

SanDisk Sansa SlotRadio Review

Summary

After attempting to sway tech simpletons away from CDs and on to microSD cards with the SlotMusic player, SanDisk is back to conquer the hearts of radio listeners in 2009 with the Sansa SlotRadio. Using a microSD card loaded with 1,000 songs across multiple genres, SanDisk hopes to emulate the radio with a twist: you technically own all the songs. Pick a genre and press play. Though SanDisk paints it as a perfect solution for tech-challenged or terminally lazy folks who can’t be bothered with managing music, skeptics will see it as a severely DRM-crippled MP3 player. Who’s right? It depends on where you stand.

Amazon Kindle 2: Does it Violate Author’s Rights?

Amazon’s next-gen Kindle 2 eBook reader, introduced earlier this week, is due to go on sale on February 24. However, publishing industry insiders already anticipate an impending controversy over its text-to-speech (TTS) capabilities.

As noted in our hands-on impressions, the Kindle 2’s biggest step forward over its predecessor appears to be its ability to vocalize text, reading manuscripts like an audiobook for the benefit of end-users. Unsurprisingly, it’s a feature that many book publishers are taking odds with.

According to sources within the publishing industry, Amazon failed to inform its publishing partners about Kindle 2’s speaking capabilities in advance of the device’s public debut. Many publishers only found out about this technological innovation at the same time consumers did.

SanDisk SlotRadio

SanDisk SlotRadioIf SanDisk’s original SlotMusic concept raised your budget-seeking antennae with a $20 player, but lost its appeal at $15 albums, the new company’s new SlotRadio Player may pick up where the original left off. The tiny Shuffle-like player will cost you $100 up front, but comes preloaded with 1,000 Billboard top 40 hits across a number of genres.

Though that works out to about 10 cents a song, even with the price of the player included, the player does have a number of caveats. For instance, songs can’t be deleted from the player make room for more or moved to a computer to play somewhere else, and even on the player itself, they cannot be individually selected: only by genre.
