ATI’s Radeon HD 4830 Comes in under $150

ATI

Hot on the heels of its latest Radeon HD 4550 and 4350 budget graphics cards, ATI debuted its mid-ranged Radeon HD4830 on Thursday. Unlike the earlier entries that hit the rock-bottom $39 price point, the new card will slide in just under the $150 level, but offer many of the same capabilities as its high-end cards.

Like the more expensive Radeon 4850 and 4870 models that share the same architecture, the 4830 uses a 55nm chip with 956 million transistors packed on board, but scales the number of stream processors down from 800 to 640. However, it still pulls off many of the same tricks, including UVD 2.0 HD video decoding, anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering, and supports ATI’s CrossFireX for adding up to four cards to a single system.

Radeon HD 3870 X2 Goes on Sale

Having just expanded the budget end of its Radeon line on Thursday, AMD turned its attention back to the bleeding edge on Monday with the release of its new flagship GPU, the Radeon HD 3870 X2. The company claims it is the first graphics processor to break the teraflop processing level of one trillion floating point calculations a second, thanks to a dual-processor design.

ATI ‘Crossfire’ Targets Nvidia’s SLI

The gaming setup is very similar to Nvidia’s. You need two video cards (one of them a new Crossfire ATI card) and a new motherboard with two video card slots. The two cards work in conjunction to offer better performance in your games and graphics applications. ATI claims that the advantage they have is that their Crossfire systems do not need updated drivers or application updates, they work with every program.

You will need a motherboard based on the ATI Radeon Xpress 200 Crossfire chipset. ASUS, DFI, ECS, GIGABYTE, MSI, PC Partner, Sapphire and TUL should all have new motherboards available shortly.

ATI Launches 512MB X800 Video Card

Further, the introduction of 512MB graphics cards allows game developers to raise the visual quality bar for their next-generation games currently in development.

The Radeon X800 XL 512MB is currently being used by today’s top developers including BioWare; Crytek; Digital Extremes; Funcom; Gas Powered Games; Grin; id Software, inc; Juice Games; Lionhead; NCsoft; Remedy and Valve. Hungry for new advanced platforms to drive development, industry pioneers are already praising ATI’s advancements powering the shift to High Definition gaming.

ATI To Show Off 512MB Video Card

In addition to offering gamers three days of top-notch gaming, the event will include an overclocking demonstration and a PC modding event. Attendees will get the opportunity to preview the world’sfirst 512MB gaming card and one lucky gamer will even get to take one home.

“Participating in events like this gives us the opportunity to find out what gamers want and need for competitive gaming,” said Rich Heye, Vice President and GM, Desktop Discrete Products, ATI. “And to say thanks for supporting ATI, we are giving attendees at this event an opportunity to check out the world’s first 512MB gaming cards before we send them out to our software partners for development of next-generation games.”

ATI Launches X700 Product Line

Delivering a gaming experience that is anything but mainstream, the RADEON X700 visual processing units (VPUs) include the advanced, cutting-edge features previously introduced in ATI’s RADEON X800family of VPUs and a higher level of performance than some of last year’s high-end visual processors, but for less than $200.

“The RADEON X700 has been designed to deliver amazing gaming performance in all of today’s popular games,” said Rick Bergman, Senior Vice President and General Manager, PC Business Unit, ATI Technologies Inc. “It’s easy to perform well in one game, but the RADEON X700 demonstrates its rendering prowess by performing well in a wide spectrum of games. It also delivers industry leading image quality and multimedia features for customers who use their computers for a wider range of applications.”

Sapphire Responds To Boycott Actions

A Website calling for the boycott of video card maker Sapphire seems to have made its point, as the company has changed the naming scheme of one of its graphics cards based on the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. The issue stems from the Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro labelled cards using a 128-bit memory bus, as apposed to other Radeon 9800 Pro’s that use a 256-bit bus.

According to the site www.boycottsapphire.com, “The card was originally named a Radeon 9800pro because it uses a 9800pro chip. After spending over an hour on the phone with Stephen [a Sapphire representative], I truly believe that Sapphire didn’t intentionally mean to mislead consumers. He explained that because the card uses a 9800pro chip, the card was simply originally named a 9800pro.”
