Toshiba Pushes 1.8-Inch Drives to 250 GB

Toshiba Pushes 1.8-Inch Drives to 250 GB

Toshiba has announced a significant expansion to its 1.8-inch hard drive line, adding the MKxx29GSG series of SATA drives, with the top model coming in with a whopping 250 GB of storage. The 1.8-inch HDD form factor is most-frequently seen in portable media players, camcorders, and ultra-portable computers, and significantly raises the bar for storage available to those devices.

“Portable PCs continue to make the transition to the SATA interface. IDC estimates that 84 percent of mobile HDD shipments in the second quarter of 2008 were SATA,” said IDC research director John Rydning, in a statement. “Toshiba’s implementation of SATA 3.0 GB/s for its new 1.8-inch HDD product line will facilitate adoption in a broad range of portable PC form factors.”

Samsung Shows Off SATA II SSDs

Samsung Shows Off SATA II SSDs

Producing solid-state drives (SSDs) with more and more storage is old news: Samsung is moving on to making them faster. On Monday, the company revealed new 64GB 1.8- and 2.5-inch drives with a SATA II interface that can write data at 100 MBps and read it at 120 MBps – twice as fast as the SATA I interface that has been used in SSDs up to this point.

Dells New OptiPlex Systems Use BTX Design

Both the OptiPlex GX520 and the OptiPlex GX620 are based on the Intel 945G chipset which means the systems can run the new 64-bit Intel processors. The more expensive OptiPlex GX620 has an option to come with dual-core processors and can come available with the new Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 operating system preinstalled. Other differences between the two systems include optional 128MB or 256MB ATI Radeon video cards on the GX620 compared to the integrated Graphics Media Accelerator 950 graphics chip.

Both systems will use the new BTX form factor designed by Intel to provide a cooler and more reliable system.

Seagate 160 GB SATA HDD Review

Quote from the review:

“The first generation of the Serial ATA standard has been around for some time now. In the beginning, people questioned if the new technology would even catch on. Today it can be fairly difficult to find a motherboard that does not support onboard SATA. The specifications for second generation SATA hard drives were officially published during the Intel Developer Forum in Barcelona, Spain last April. The second generation standard supports speeds of 300 MB/s, double that of the first generation’s 150 MB/s. Thankfully, current SATA users will not have to upgrade their hardware or cables to make the switch from first to second generation SATA hard drives. Hopefully we will see second generation SATA hard drives on the market during the third quarter of 2004. Today, however, we will be looking at Seagate’s first generation SATA hard drive, the Barracuda 7200.7 SATA (available with 80, 120, 160 and 200 GB), specifically the ST3160023AS, which features speeds of 7200 rpm, an 8.5 ms average seek time, 8 MB cache and 160 GB capacity.”

Plextor Introduces SATA 12X DVD Burner

With the PX-712SA, users can record a full DVD in less than 6 minutes at a burst rate of 16.5 MB per second, allowing them to create, edit, and share customized DVDs faster than ever before.

The new internal drive is the first Plextor product to feature an integrated Serial ATA connection, enabling OEMs and System Integrators to leverage the benefits of Serial ATA. Serial ATA, which extends bandwidth to 150 MB/sec, is an evolutionary replacement for the Parallel ATA (E-IDE) physical storage interface. The interface supports one device per controller connection, eliminating master/slave configuration jumper issues. SATA also provides a substantial pin count reduction from Parallel ATA, while thinner cables help air-flow and improve cable routing.

Plextor Announces 2 New 12x DVD Writers

Plextor Corp. today announced the PX-712SA DVD±R/RW drive with support for high-speed 12X DVD+R and 8X DVD-R recording. With the PX-712SA, users can record a full DVD in less than 6 minutes at a burst rate of 16.5 MB per second, allowing them to create, edit, and share customized DVDs faster than ever before.

Alienware to use Seagate SATA drives

Alienware indicated that Seagate’s SATA drives are being rapidly adopted by PC game enthusiasts and other trendsetters.

Alienware’s award-winning Area-51 is one of the first PCs to feature Seagate SATA hard drives along with Intel’s new 875P chipset (code-named
Canterwood) and a 3GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor. Alienware is a favored choice among hard-core gamers and leading PC game developers for system performance.

Maxtor ships 120GB and 80GB SATA HDD’s

Maxtor 250GB and 200GB SATA Ultra Series kits will be available on retail shelves mid-June.

“Demand from gamers, digital video professionals and hobbyists building home computers for MP3 audio convinced us that our super-capacity Maxtor® DiamondMax® drives needed to be available inretail,” stated Anna Jen, senior director of retail product marketing at Maxtor. “By offering the highest capacity Serial ATA drives, Maxtor continues its leadership and commitment to meet customerdemands for the latest in hard disk drive technology.”

Maxtor’s SATA HDD’s work w/ 875P chipset

Tests were done in both Intel and Maxtor labs. OEMs, solution providers and system builders now have a variety of pre-tested SATA combinations for building PCs, RAID arrays and near-line storage applications. Included in many 875P platforms is Intel RAID technology that supports high-performance RAID arrays for SATA hard disk drives.

Maxtor’s SATA hard drives will be demonstrated in select cities in the United States during the Intel Channel Conference (ICC), April 15 ? May 23.
