First Mobile Service Using Geostationary Satellite

First Mobile Service Using Geostationary Satellite

Asia Pacific Systems (AP Systems, President Jung Ki-ro) held a commencement ceremony for its geostationary satellite mobile service on April 6, in their office building at Gasan-dong, Seoul. The service is the first commercial service in Korea using a geosynchronous high earth orbit satellite.

An AP Systems’ satellite phone costs 924,000 won (US$701.30), and using 50 minutes in a month costs 80,000 won (US$60.50), which is the cheapest flat rate.

AP Systems predicts that it will earn 7.5 billion won (US$5.7 million) and collect 6,000 subscribers in Korea in its first year by providing distinguished service no matter where someone is.

U.S., Russian Satellites Collide in Orbit

U.S., Russian Satellites Collide in Orbit

In what’s believed to be the most significant incident of its kind, a derelict Russian Kosmos 2251 military satellite has collided with a U.S. communications satellite that’s part of the Iridium satellite communication network. The collision occurred approximately 500 miles over Siberia, and has produced a cloud of debris containing at least 600 objects that are currently being tracked by NASA and other agencies. Although the debris doesn’t pose any immediate threat to the International Space Station (ISS) or the space shuttle launch planned for later this month, the debris cloud makes an already-complicated task of finding launch windows that much more difficult…and the debris could pose a risk to the Hubble Space Telescope.

Report: Sirius XM Radio Ponders Bankruptcy

Report: Sirius XM Radio Ponders Bankruptcy

The New York Times is reporting (subscription required) that satellite radio operator Sirius XM is preparing for a possible bankruptcy filing. According to the New York Times, Sirius XM owes about $175 million in debt repayments that are due at the end of February that it will not be able to pay. Although a bankruptcy filing is unlikely to disrupt service to the more than 45 million subscribers to satellite radio service, it may signal the departure of some of the broadcaster’s A-list talent…like Martha Stewart or Howard Stern.

Toshiba Brings New Laptops To CES

Toshiba Brings New Laptops To CES

Toshiba has brought several new laptops, as well as refreshing its Satellite series, to CES this year.

“This is an exciting time for the consumer electronics community—we’re dealing with a generation that is technically sophisticated, and responds favorably to innovation,” said Jeff Barney, vice president and general manager of Digital Products Division, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. “That’s exactly our mandate at Toshiba: We deliver laptops, devices and accessories that combine entertainment with innovative technologies, and every product on display at this show demonstrates those core values.”

Two Sought By FBI For 2003 Hack

In 2003 the satellite TV market was pretty cutthroat, and retailers would do almost anything to have an edge on the competition. In the case of Web retailers Miami-based Rapid Satellite and Weaknees in LA, that anything included a denial of service hack attack that took their sites offline.

Now the FBI is looking for a Brit, Graham Walker, and a German, Axel Gembe, in connection with the attack. If convicted, they’re looking at 15 years in jail, the BBC reports. Two others, Jay Echouafni and Paul Ashley, have already been charged with conspiracy in the case. Ashley pleaded guilty and has served two years, while Echouafni is currently a fugitive.

New Satellite Pros Barely Top $1,000

New Satellite Pros Barely Top $1,000

Refreshing its Satellite Pro line of business notebooks on Tuesday, Toshiba rolled out five new machines tailored to mobile professional. The latest releases include screen sizes between 13.3 and 17 inches, processors from both Intel and AMD, and plenty of options for customization.

In its sub-$1000 range, Toshiba added the Satellite Pro L300, L300D, and M300. Both L-series machines feature 15.4-inch displays and start at $699, making them the no-frills budget machines of the group. The L300 uses Intel Core 2 Duo processors, while the L300D uses AMD dual-core processors. The pricier $999 M300 knocks screen size down to a more compact 14.1 inches, along with adding options like a 1.3-megapixel webcam with built-in microphone.

EchoSTAR Now Officially Dish Network

Satellite television operator EchoStar has notified its shareholders that it plans to change its name to Dish Network, mirroring the name of the company’s most popular satellite TV offering. In addition, the firm plans to spin off its satellite receiver and commercial satellite lines into EchoStar Holding Company, which will eventually take on the name EchoStar Communications.

Sirius and XM Plan A La Carte Services

Sirius and XM Plan A La Carte Services

Where the satellite radio industry used to be a-buzz with releases, new products, news of exclusive content deals, and announcements that one company or another had a new partnership with one vehicle maker or another, since the two competing satellite operators Sirius and XM announced plans for a $13 billion merger back in February, the industry has mostly been holding its breath. Would the FCC approve the merger of the only two companies operating satellite radio franchises in the United States? On the face of it, it would seem that going from two satellite radio providers to one would be bad for consumer choice, but the companies themselves argue their competition isn’t in the satellite radio arena: it’s mobile phone operators, portable media, and the Internet.

DirecTV, EchoStar Partner with Clearwire

Satellite television operators DirecTV and EchoStar are ratcheting up their competition with cable behemoths like Time Warner and Comcast by partnering with Clearwire to offer high-speed wireless Internet connectivity with satellite television. The deal also allows Clearwire to offer DirecTV and/or EchoStar satellite TV service to its Internet customers. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed; service offerings should become available later this year.

DirecTV Sat-Go Takes Satellite TV With You

If there’s one thought that’s crossed the mind of most satellite TV owners—besides “where is that darn remote?”—it could be this: since the satellite signal the system receives is available almost everywhere, why is my television stuck in the living room? Shouldn’t I be able to tap in wherever I go?”
