At a news conference in Tokyo introducing the new Nintendo DS Lite (scheduled to go on sale in Japan March 2), Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced the company plans to begin selling a Web browser for its Nintendo DS handheld gaming systems, as well as a card which would let the devices tune into television broadcasts for mobile phones. The offerings would first be available in the Japanese market

Nintendo Developing New Gaming Console
Nintendo President Satoru Iwata refused to give details, saying he feared competitors will steal the plan, but said a prototype, which will be shown next year, will deliver “new ideas” for entertainment and won’t be merely a more powerful version of its current Game Cube machine.
Iwata reiterated his view that Nintendo should not follow the strategy of Sony, which is working on a more powerful chip to drive its next-generation home game machine.

Pricey Parts Threaten Console Profits
Nintendo Co Ltd’s dual-screen handheld, DS, and Sony Corp’s PlayStation Portable (PSP) come armed with all the bells and whistles of a modern game machine, which is good news for gamers but potentially bad for the two companies.
Surging demand for mobile phones and digital cameras has created a shortage of small liquid crystal displays (LCDs). That spells trouble for Nintendo and Sony since the DS offers two, three-inch (7.6 cm) screens and the PSP promises a 4.3-inch monitor.
Nintendo Could Take Hit On New DS System
The two-screen Nintendo DS console is unlikely to be as profitable from the outset as the Game Boy Advance was, company president Satoru Iwata has warned, with the complex design of the handheld presenting both financial and supply problems.
Speaking with news agency Reuters, Iwata-san said that the use of two screens in the system was presenting a challenge to LCD panel supplier Sharp, prompting fears that there may be a shortage of DS hardware at its launch later this year.

Nintendo plans new game product
“We are preparing a new product which will give a fresh surprise to consumers,” President Satoru Iwata told a news conference on the video game maker’s business strategy.
Iwata said the announcement would be aimed at helping investors understand where the industry veteran is heading and what it is focused on.
Poor explanation, poor results
Iwata said a poor explanation about Nintendo’s mid-term business strategy was partly to blame for a plunge in its share price after archrival Sony Corp unveiled plans to launch its own handheld game device in 2004 which will play music and movies.
Kirby creator leaves Nintendo
According to Japanese news reports, Sakurai-san made the revelation in his Weekly Famitsu column, stating that he leaves of his own free will and not because of poor relationships, or because of a desire to move to another company.
However, other reports from the region suggest that Sakurai-san felt he wasn’t able to develop the games he wanted for Nintendo, and eventually decided to go on that basis.
For now, the veteran of several console generations, who first came to the gaming world’s attention with Kirby’s Dreamland for the Game Boy, will be taking up light freelance work until he can find something else that suits his talents.
