Ooma Tacks Features Onto Premier Service

Ooma Tacks Features Onto Premier Service

Ooma’s magic box that turns broadband Internet connections into a phone line – the Ooma Hub device – just got a lot more powerful. On Wednesday, the company debuted a feature update to the box that delivers a slew of advanced new features above and beyond what’s possible with conventional phone service.

With the addition of virtual numbers, the box allows users to create different phone numbers for different purposes. For instance: one as a main line, one for the kids, and one for the home office. The system can also now be used to send voicemails directly to e-mail with the touch of button, forward calls to mobile phones, log calls, and even blacklist callers.

Rescue Charger Ressurects Dead Phones

Rescue Charger Ressurects Dead Phones

The Boy Scout motto – “Be Prepared” – may call to mind images of knives, flints and rope, but these days, a cell phone can be as helpful in averting a disaster as any of those items. That is, if the battery isn’t dead. Unlike creating fire or finding shelter, there aren’t novel ways of recharging a phone in the middle of nowhere, but Iogear aims to change that with its new GearJuice Rescue Charger, a last resort when a few minutes of talk time is all you need.

Yahoo Buys College Sports Site Rivals.com

Just days after Jerry Yang replaced Terry Semel as CEO, Yahoo has spent a reported $100 million to buy Rivals.com, hoping to broaden its base among college sports fans – and college sports, of course, are big business.   Although the deal has Yang’s signature on the papers, negotiations began while Yemel was still in charge. But, said Yahoo senior VP Scott Moore,   “Jerry is very excited about it.”   In addition to college sports, Rivals.com also covers high school sports. Much of its revenue comes from member subscriptions. Founded in 2001, it currently has 185,000 subscribers and 85 employees. More than two million people a month visit the site. By comparison, Yahoo’s sports section attracted 15.1 million visitors last month.   Interestingly, the acquisition will put Yahoo in direct competition with News Corp., which has just offered MySpace in exchange for a 25% share in Yahoo. News Corp owns Scout.com, which covers the same ground as Rivals.com.

Fox, MySpace Go with Google for $900 Mln

In a surprising move, Internet search titan Google and Fox Interactive Media have announced a deal wherein Google will pay Fox $900 million through the year 2010 to be the exclusive search and keyword advertising provider for Fox Interactive Media Web sites—which happens to include social networking juggernaut MySpace.com.

Unleash Your Joker in City of Villains

Computer game publisher NCsoft today announced that the stand-alone sequel to their popular massively multi-player online PC game City of Heroes had gone live. Called City of Villains, this game is available for $49.99 and developed by Cryptic Studios.

City of Villains, NCsoft said, was developed to fit the needs of those who have always wanted to play the bad guy who foils the superhero’s Boy Scout antics. New features include the ability to create evil super villain lairs, villainous missions such as heists, abductions and infiltrations and player versus player zones where villains can battle hero players in the City of Heroes game.
