Best Digital Cameras for Your Buck

Shutterbugs, rejoice. Thanks to today’s bevy of inexpensive point-and-shoot digital cameras, many ideal for everyday use, amateur paparazzi will find that this summer, there’s no need to spring for a luxury DSLR capable of snapping magazine-quality shots. That said, we’ve rounded up some of the best options vacationers and thrill seekers alike can buy on a budget.

Better yet, while the following models will all take great pictures, you’ll also feel comfortable bringing each model with you no matter where you travel. Although at these prices, even if one does happen to find its way into the lion’s den at the zoo, at least you won’t have to go home with a broken heart. Or, for that matter, out a (doh!) thousand bucks…

Touch-Based Netbook Breaks in Half, Runs for 15 Hours

Touch-Based Netbook Breaks in Half, Runs for 15 Hours

If you’ve ever fantasized about snapping your laptop in half in a fit of anger, now you can finally pull it off – without breaking anything. On Sunday, the Menlo-Park-based startup Always Innovating announced the Touch Book, a specialized netbook with a detachable screen.

Using a set of hinged rails, the 8.9-inch screen on the Touch Book slides right off the attached keyboard. Because the hardware for the computer is built behind the screen (rather than below the keyboard like most notebooks) the screen continues to function on its own as a standalone tablet PC.

Amazon’s New, Slimmer Kindle 2 Due Feb. 24

Amazon

Amazon has taken the wraps off the Kindle 2, a new version of its popular ebook reader. The Kindle 2 aims to improve on the original Oprah-beloved Kindle reader by offering a sharper screen, a sharper 6-inch e-Ink display, substantially expanded storage, a new slim design, and an experimental “read to me” feature that uses text-to-speech technology so users can listen to books, magazines, newspapers, and other content using the Kindle.

“Kindle 2 is everything customers tell us they love about the original Kindle, only thinner, faster, crisper, with longer battery life, and capable of holding hundreds more books,” said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, in a statement.

Ultrasound Gives Feel To Virtual Objects

Gamers love those vibrating handsets that simulate the feel of explosions and actions. In just a few years they might be able to go one better by reaching out their hands and feeling objects on the screen. At least that will be the way if the commercial development of a new Japanese process happens.

So far the field of haptics has required special gloves to create the sensation of feeling objects on a computer screen. But new research is using focused ultrasound to create the same effect, the BBC reports.

HP Launches Mini-Note ULPC for Education

HP Launches Mini-Note ULPC for Education

Rumors of a ultra-low-cost PC from HP have drifted around on the Web since February, but on Tuesday, HP finally firmed up its ultra-mobile offering by taking the wraps off the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC. Designed primarily for education, the low-cost machine offers light weight and a toughened-up design to tailor it to kids.

Much like similar offerings in the ULPC category dominated by the Asus Eee, the Mini-Note weighs in at about 2.5 pounds and offers an 8.9-inch screen. HP hasn’t officially announced what’s under the hood of the new notebook, but two Amazon.com product pages indicate both a 1.2GHz version with a conventional 120GB hard drive, and a 1.0GHz version with a 4GB SSD. Both machines use the VIA C7-M processor, which has practically become the de facto standard for low-cost notebooks.

Hitachi Debuts Phones with E-Ink Designs

Hitachi Debuts Phones with E-Ink Designs

While e-ink has so far been used as a practical utilitarian alternative to LCDs, Hitachi has revealed that it can have artistic purposes as well with its new W61H cell phones. The new phones use e-ink overlays on their shells to display an array of designs, presenting a way to digitally personalize the phone’s exterior.

According to Newlaunches, the feature will be known as a “silhouette screen,” and will come with 95 patterns, from flowery organic designs to geometric patterns. The screens are apparently not capable of displaying actual information off the phone, such as text messages, so they will remain purely aesthetic for the time being.

LG Philips to Intro Giant Multitouch Screen

LG Philips to Intro Giant Multitouch Screen

Multitouch technology is moving away from tiny implementations like cell phones and tablet PCs, and on to the big screen: 52 inches across, to be exact. LG Philips LCD announced on Monday that its booth at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas would include a mammoth multitouch-enabled LCD screen spanning 52 inches.

Unlike smaller cousins like the iPhone which use capacitive resistance to measure touch, the new screens use tiny infrared sensors to locate up to two points of contact on the screen. Similar to Microsoft’s surface computer, the screens should allow users to intuitively zoom in on maps, rearrange photos and other tasks with two hands. The screen will also boast full 1080p resolution.

Toshiba Unveils Portege M700 Tablet PC

Borrowing technology from its first LED-backlit ultraportable, the Portege R500, Toshiba released a new tablet PC on Monday that takes advantage of the same high-efficiency lighting solution. The M700 tablet uses LEDs to extend the run-time of a lightweight 4700mAh battery to over four hours, and improve screen readability in less-than-ideal lighting conditions.

Besides next-generation backlighting, the M700 also makes use of an advanced touch screen that can distinguish between fingers and styluses to make use of both, and ignore accidental touches by prioritizing input from the stylus whenever it is detected.
