At its second Intel Developer Forum in Shanghai, chip developer Intel officially took the wraps off its new Atom line of low power processors, designed to drive mobile Internet-enabled devices and other in-pocket, connected devices. Previously code-named "Silverthorne" and "Menlow," the new Atom chips should be available later this year, and will be manufactured using Intel’s 45nm process with hi-k metal gate technology similar to that used in the company’s high-end processors.

Intel Unveils Atom Processors for UMPCs
The Intel chips formerly known as Silverthorne and Diamondville during their earliest stages of development finally received a unified final name and official launch on Sunday. The newly dubbed Atom processor, intended for ultra-mobile PCs, will be Intel’s smallest chip ever produced, and also its lowest power processer ever.
“This small wonder is a fundamental new shift in design, small yet powerful enough to enable a big Internet experience on these new devices,” said Intel executive vice president Sean Maloney, in a statement. “We believe it will unleash new innovation across the industry.”
Intel Announces 3 Series Chipset
Intel’s executive vice president Sean Maloney took the wraps off the company’s latest chipset on Tuesday morning, at the Computex trade show in Taipei, Taiwan. The 3 Series chipset, formerly codenamed "Bearlake," will support Intel’s latest 45nm Penryn processors, which will come out later this year.
The 3 Series chipset will support DDR2 memory up to 800MHz, or DDR3 memory up to 1333MHz, along with support for Intel’s own "Turbo Memory," which is supposed to improve application load times and boot times. For the latest generation of graphics cards, a PCI Express 2.0 connection is also included.
Future Blackberries will have Intel Inside
Intel announced today that it has signed an extensive technology agreement with Canada’s Research in Motion (RIM) to supply processors for future Blackberry products. RIM plans to use Intel’s forthcoming PXA9xx cellular processor, codenamed "Hernon" for forthcoming Blackberry devices which will connect to high-speed Enhanced Data Rated for Global Evolution (EDGE) network. EDGE is an advanced data technology for GSM wireless networks which enables high-speed data exchange.
Mike Lazaridis, RIM’s President and Co-CEO said "We chose the Intel PXA9xx cellular processor because it provides us with the increased processing horsepower we need for future wireless applications, without compromising battery life requirements."
Intel Outlines Broadband Wireless Vision
From Intel’s press release:
Broadband wireless technologies will help bring the next five billion users to the Internet, an Intel Corporation executive explained today at the Wireless Communications Association (WCA) annual symposium.
Sean Maloney, Intel executive vice president and general manager of the Intel Communications Group, outlined the company’s plan to work with the industry to dramatically drive down the cost and increase the availability of broadband wireless technologies, including 802.11 wireless local area networking (WLAN) and 802.16 wireless metropolitan area networking (WMAN). This effort will help attract the next wave of Internet users, particularly those in emerging markets such as China, India and Latin America.
Intel’s Centrino Chipset To Support 802.11G
