Samsung Launches 8500-series LED HDTVs

Samsung has formally announced its new 8500-series HDTVS, featuring local-dimmer LED backlighting that helps boost the units’ dynamic contrast ratio of 7,000,000:1—plus the 8500-series features the Yahoo Widget Engine to tap into Internet-based content like news, weather, video, and services like Flickr.

"For consumers who are looking for the ultimate HD centerpiece and high-level performance in their home theater, the Samsung 8500 Series delivers break-through quality and design," said Samsung Electronics America’s senior Vp of visual display marketing John Revie, in a statement "The 8500 Series underscores Samsung’s dedication to providing a full range of HDTVs that not only achieve the highest levels of picture quality, but also provide unique and immersive entertainment experiences."

New Toshiba Regza HDTVs Offer Localized-dimming Backlights

Electronics giant Toshiba has rolled out its latest Regza line of HDTVs, featuring new FocalLight LED backlighting technology that enables localized dimming on jut portions of the display, enhancing contrast and improving picture quality. The new Regza units also incorporate a bundle of features sure to appeal to home video buffs, including Toshib’a PixelPure 5G 14-bit video processing and new AutoView controlled automatic picture adjustment.

“For 2009, we developed and incorporated a wide range of advanced, robust technologies to create an all-new level of Regza LCD TV,” said Toshiba marketing VP Scott Ramirez, in a statement. “The new REGZA is more than our dealers and consumers expected, and the response has been nothing short of amazing.”

Low-cost HDTV maker Vizio isn’t bashful about its product introductions, and is apparently now taking a shotgun approach to the high-definition television market, announcing total of 31 new models that will be available to consumers starting from right now and running through September, 2009. The models are distributed across three lines—XVT, M, and E series—and are designed to appeal to a range of consumers tastes—and all 31 units are Energy Star 3.0-compliant.

Samsung Brings Touch of Color to New 70-Series LCD Monitors

Electronics giant Samsung has introduced its new 70-series of LCD monitors, featuring performance and display capabilities from Samsung’s LCD television line, combined with slim profiles (as little as 30mm) and Samsung’s Touch of Color design. The 70-series will be available in two sizes—20 and 23 inches—and one version will even come with a built-in HDTV tuner so it can act as both an entertainment hub and a traditional monitor.

Gateway Debuts Small, High-Def TC Notebooks

Computer maker Gateway—now a subsidiary of Acer—has announced its new TC series of notebook computers, which bring design elements from its MC and MD series to a smaller form-factor…while keeping the HD-friendly display and budget-conscious pricing. WIth the TC series, Gateway hopes to hit the sweet spot between easy portability and a mainstream media and computing notebook.

"We’ve taken the best of our incredibly popular MC and MD lines and made it even more compact and lightweight in the TC Series," said Acer America senior product marketing manager Ray Sawall, in a statement. "The result is the perfect marriage of useful features and compact design punctuated with an eye-catching style."

Gateway Intros Two Notebook Lines at CES

Computer maker (and Acer subsidiary) Gateway has announced two new notebook computer lines at this week’s CES show in Las Vegas. The multimedia-friendly MD series offers a 16:9 15.6-inch display and HDMI 1.3 output, while the lightweight UC series still caters to the media set with a 13.3-inch 16:9 display, but still packs enough of a punch in the processing department to function as someone’s primary computer.

“These two new offerings are the result of Gateway’s focus on the needs of distinct mobile customers,” said Acer America senior product marketing manager Ray Sawall, in a statement. “These notebooks are incredibly different in terms of style and form factor, yet they both include best-in-class technology at incredible values.”

Sony Introduces Cheaper Blu-ray Vaios

With the prices on standalone Blu-ray players finally starting to slowly tick backwards, Blu-ray drives in computers are beginning to follow. Sony introduced two cheaper Blu-ray equipped notebooks on Friday with the NS and CS series Vaios, which will sell for as low as $1,000 in Blu-ray-equipped form.

The two notebooks are primarily differentiated by their form factors: the NS gets a standard 15.4-inch screen while the CS gets a more compact 14.1-inch screen. Both have been tailored for high-def viewing with Xbrite-Eco LCDs, Intel Core 2 Duo processors, and 4GB RAM in the Blu-ray configurations. They also get dedicated A/V modes  to cut down on the number of steps needed to get a movie playing or control playback.

If iRobot’s existing robots that vacuum, mop, scoop out your gutters and clean your pool bottom aren’t already enough to keep your pad squeaky clean, perhaps one of the latest two specialty robots the company scooted out on Wednesday will do the trick. The Roomba Pet Series will cater especially to picking up debris from your fluffy little critter, while the Professional Series has been hopped up to deal with bigger, tougher environments.

B&W Adds Four New CM Series LoudspeakersThe Brits over at Bowers & Wilkins have never been conservative with their designs. From zeppelin-shaped iPod docks to loudspeakers curled likeseashells, the company’s designers like to push limits. But its latest release at IFA 2008 actually turns back the clock with a more traditional look, albeit one still drenched in B&Wstyle.

B&W has added onto its popular CM Series loudspeakers with the CM9 three-way floorstanding speaker, CM5 two-way stand-mount speaker, CMC2 center speaker, and ASW 10CM subwoofer. All pick up a range of upgrades from their previous CM-series incarnations. The CM9 and CMC2 both get improved FST drivers with Kevlar cones, while the bass drivers in all units get longer voice coils and stronger magnets than the lower-priced 600 Series.
