China could be $1 trillion green tech market

China could be $1 trillion green tech market

China potentially could be a $500 billion to $1 trillion a year market for environmentally sustainable "green technologies," a group of businesses and experts said in a report Thursday that urges governments to ease the way for such initiatives.

The report by the China Greentech Initiative, a group of more than 80 leading technology companies, non-governmental organizations and policy advisers, pinpointed opportunities from 300 potential green technology options for China, spanning energy, water, buildings, transportation and industry.

But government support is key, said Richard Gledhill, global leader of Climate Change & Carbon Market Services in London for PricewaterhouseCoopers, a consultancy that helped head the research.

Missing Prototype iPhone Leads to Chinese Worker’s Death

Missing Prototype iPhone Leads to Chinese Worker

A 25-year-old old employee of China’s Foxconn, a mammoth manufacturing company that builds many products for Apple as well as other manufacturers, has committed suicide over the loss of a prototype 4th-generation iPhone that was in his care. The worker jumped to his death from the 12th floor of his apartment building in the southern city of Shenzhen early in the morning of July 16, according to the state run regional paper Southern Metropolis Daily (Chinese). However, the apparent suicide is mixed with allegations from the worker’s friends that he had been detained and beaten by Foxconn security personnel over the missing device, as well as having had his apartment searched.

AMD Istanbul Processors Match Intel’s Latest with Six Cores

AMD Istanbul Processors Match Intel

Intel may have been the first chipmaker to introduce a six-core processor with the Xeon 7400 series, but it won’t be for long. AMD played catch-up on Wednesday by unveiling its new Opteron processors for servers, which will jump from four cores to six while retaining compatibility with the old socket 1207 platform. The company demonstrated the new processors earlier this week.

The so-called Istanbul uses the same 45nm processor as the earlier Shanghai processors, and should operate within the same power consumption and throw off a similar amount of heat as a result. That’s good for system manufacturers, who won’t have to significantly retool existing plans to make room for Istanbul.

AMD Rolls Out 45nm Quad-Core Opteron CPUs

AMD Rolls Out 45nm Quad-Core Opteron CPUs

Chipmaker AMD has formally rolled out its new 45nm Quad-Core Opteron processors. Dubbed “Shanghai” and aimed at the high performance workstation and server market, the new CPUs are designed to offer advanced virtualization capabilities—so one processor can, in effect, host several systems, potentially running different operating systems—and more efficient operation: according to AMD, the new chips offer up to 35 percent more performance than previous AMD processors, while running on up to 35 percent less power. Although the chip comes almost a year after Intel shipped its 45 nm workstation and server processors, AMD is hoping to capture additional marketshare by offering a more efficient chip designed to handle virtualization more easily.

Intel Intros Atom Processors

At its second Intel Developer Forum in Shanghai, chip developer Intel officially took the wraps off its new Atom line of low power processors, designed to drive mobile Internet-enabled devices and other in-pocket, connected devices. Previously code-named "Silverthorne" and "Menlow," the new Atom chips should be available later this year, and will be manufactured using Intel’s 45nm process with hi-k metal gate technology similar to that used in the company’s high-end processors.

Mixi Social Network Hits China

Mixi Social Network Hits ChinaYou might not have heard of Mixi, but it’s big in Japan, one of the largest social networks there, in fact. Now it’s ready to spread its wings and head intoChina, with plans to set up a Shanghai subsidiary this spring, according to Thomson Financial.   Mixi was founded in 2004 and has becomea major force in social networking among the young in Japan, and claimed to have over 13 million members, up five million from a year ago, even though MySpacelaunched in Japan in 2006.   Mixi will be going head-to-head against MySpace in China, too, since the Rupert Murdoch-owned company launched its own service there last year. But the Japanesedon’t seem too perturbed.   "We see China as a market that has huge potential for the Internet, including in mobile wireless Internet services," Mixi said in a statement."In terms of the future growth of our business, overseas expansion provides an important opportunity to expand revenue,"

Intel Developing Next OLPC CPU?

Intel Developing Next OLPC CPU?

Last July, chipmaker Intel joined the board of the One Laptop Per Child project, in a move widely seen as a play to usurp AMD’s position at the heart of the OLPC XO laptop to be built by Taiwan’s Quanta. Now, Intel says it has plans to develop a new microprocessor architecture explicitly for the OLPC project and other low-cost notebook computers, and plans to unveil the design at its developer forum to be held in Shanghai in April, 2008.

Google Extends In China

Google Extends In ChinaGoogle is continuing its quest for world domination. The search giant has announced that it’s bought a stake in the Chinese community site Tianya.cn.   That takes Google not only into China, currently the world’s second-largest Internet market, but also into social networking.   Although thesize of Google’s stake hasn’t been confirmed, reports put it at anywhere from 10-60%. No financial details have been revealed.   Google might be the search engine of choice for many, but it’s not China’s favorite. There it lags behind Baidu.com, which has more than a 58% share of the market, compared to Google’s 22%.  With 162 million web users, China is a massive and rapidly-growing market, and social networking has taken off there, with plenty of venture capital investment.   As a sign that Google is eyeingthe Chinese market very seriously, the company has won preliminary approval for the Chinese government to provide Internet content. That will continue to put it in competition with Baidu, which hasgain approval to offer its own reporting.   Google has a Chinese-language map search service and also offers its online word processing program, while additionally it’s attempting to buildan online Chinese library service. It also opened an engineering research center in Shanghai.
